Department Overview The Department of Philosophy offers a general Philosophy Major, Pre-Law Option, Religious Studies Option, and minors in Philosophy, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Middle East Studies. The department offers courses in Contemporary Moral Conflicts, Moral Questions, 19th Century Philosophy, 20th Century Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Feminist Philosophy, and Philosophy of Law, among others.

Position Summary The department seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate courses such as:

Phil 25: Methods of Reasoning

– Principles and methods of good reasoning. Topics include argument structure, deductive and inductive reasoning, observation assessment, language and reasoning, and common fallacies. Phil 150: Foundations of Knowledge

– Nature, sources, and limits of human knowledge. Topics include perception, reason, testimony, intuition, science, mathematics, values, arts, religion, social issues, and psychological states. Phil 125W: Issues in Political Philosophy

– Examination of prominent political philosophies and contemporary public policy issues. Topics include scope and limits of government authority, role of government in economy, foreign policy, health care, education, agriculture, and environment. Meets upper‑division writing skills requirement.

Instructor Responsibility Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to university policies as directed in the Academic Policy Manual. Duties include preparation, delivery, proctoring, and grading of lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, midterm and final exams. All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, in‑person, or hybrid).

Conditional Appointment Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to collective bargaining agreement. Eligibility to work in the United States is required (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for temporary faculty positions).

Required Qualifications Education

– Ph.D. in Philosophy (advanced ABD considered). Experience

– Demonstrated commitment to excellence built on merit, talent, diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunity for all.

Preferred Qualifications Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced through prior teaching experiences and evaluations. Successful undergraduate teaching experience.
