Classification Type: SHRA
Work Hours: Sunday through Saturday nights, 12‑hour shifts (40 hours per week). Shift, weekend, and overtime may be required.
Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies: All Emergency and Pandemic On Site
Location: VC for Business & Finance, Operations – Support Services
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require a valid NC Driver’s License.
Preferred: Previous experience in security, law enforcement or protection work.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct self‑initiated security checks with continuous foot patrols.
Monitor activities within Residence Halls, Library, Food Court, and Athletic Facilities.
Maintain a thorough knowledge of campus layout, alarm and fire detection systems.
Assist students, employees, and visitors with questions or concerns.
Report, document and resolve security issues, safety concerns and/or hazards.
Comply with departmental policies, procedures and General Orders.
Complete tasks and duty assignments, volunteer for overtime, and learn University functions (Student Life, Housing, Facilities).
Understand protective, security, and enforcement practices.
Apply basic first aid knowledge.
Apply knowledge of property security and enforcement procedures.
Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of security and enforcement equipment (parking meters, vehicle boots, gates, alarm panels, radios, cameras, electronic ticketing devices).
Use the full functionality of security/surveillance systems.
Apply knowledge of policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property.
Display organizational awareness and working knowledge of the assigned area infrastructure.
Use knowledge of radio procedures and provide clear written documentation to victims, witnesses, detainees, and other officers.
Evaluate emergencies immediately and relay emergency information clearly to dispatchers.
Communicate regarding issues that require judgment or interpretation.
Explain policies, rules, and regulations with tact and courtesy.
Complete reports.
Interact with co‑workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, university officials, and the general public to provide assistance and relay information.
Patrol, monitor, and guard assigned area with higher assessed risk.
Recognize, identify, and report unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions.
Assist in emergency response and provide support for special events.
Control and direct traffic of people and vehicles.
Erect barricades.
Assist at University events by collaborating with event staff and law enforcement.
Identify problems/concerns and take appropriate action.
Analyze situations to make quick, sound decisions.
Recognize critical incidents.
Initiate action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures.
