This position has responsibilities to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment in a food processing environment. It requires proficiency in multiple skill clusters, including electrical controls, fluid power, mechanical systems, welding, fabrication, and manufacturing processes. The employee will perform medium- to high-level machine systems troubleshooting and repair, providing technical support for all phases of the operation. The work ranges from average to considerable difficulty across various mechanical maintenance actions.

Essential Job Functions

Receives work orders/requests, reviews to determine tool, equipment, time, parts, and supplies requirements, and meets schedules.

When responding to crisis calls, arrives at the scene with basic tools and equipment necessary to perform work.

Reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, etc.

Maintains various activity records and logs.

Observes equipment or machinery while in operation to detect malfunctions.

Disassembles mechanical equipment; identifies faulty/worn parts, replaces, reassembles, and tests.

Tests major subsystems or components to localize problems using specialized equipment.

Fabricates replacement parts which may require welding, cutting, or sheet metal work.

Performs preventive maintenance on various mechanical systems and equipment. Installs new equipment/appliances, including running any electrical, water, gas, or drain lines required.

Performs preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, compressors, exhaust fans, blowers, and electrical controls.

Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining mechanical equipment, piping systems, electrical controls/components in accordance with manufacturer’s specification, local regulations, and company safety policies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

HS Diploma; associate technical maintenance or vocational school degree a plus.

Experience:

At least 2+ years in industrial mechanical maintenance, preferably in food manufacturing.

Communication Skills:

Must be able to read and write fluently in English. Must be able to understand technical and training manuals written in English. Possesses the ability to function effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of team personnel and outside contractors.

Special Skills Ability to operate a forklift, genie lift, or scissors lift. Must be able to interpret basic machine electrical schematics. Ability to read blueprint drawings. Working knowledge and skills in operating a variety of small hand tools and devices used in general mechanical maintenance operations. Displays sound judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently with little supervision. Other requirements: Requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform lifting of 50# or more. Must be dependable and have an excellent attendance record.

Required Skills

Fill out paperwork including work orders, inventory and preventive maintenance forms.

Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot equipment and components.

Select and properly use lubrication in maintenance of equipment.

Apply sealants and fillers.

Basic knowledge of workplace safety including PPE use and response to emergencies and accidents.

Identify and safely use hand and power tools associated with the trade.

Understanding of blueprint basics.

Apply OSHA-mandated lockout/tagout procedures.

Install, repair, replace and maintain gaskets, seals, packings, O-rings, belt drives, bearings and couplings.

Select and use various types of chemical cleaners and strippers.

Maintain and repair drain, waste and vent (DWV) systems.

Maintain and repair various types of valves.

Install and finish drywall.

Use techniques in oxyfuel cutting.

Troubleshoot and repair AC and DC motors.

Troubleshoot and test grounding systems.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace various types of compressors.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace heat pumps.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace components of pneumatic systems.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace electric generators and batteries used in standby and emergency systems.

Troubleshoot and repair cooling systems.

Install, maintain, and repair control valves, actuators and positioners.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace pneumatic systems including preventive maintenance, inspection and reading diagrams.

Install, maintain and repair water supply piping.

Troubleshoot and replace voltage regulators.

Troubleshoot reduced voltage starters, auto transformers, resistors, reversing starters, electrical systems in hazardous locations, and variable frequency drives.

Inspect and maintain variable frequency drives.

Install, troubleshoot, maintain and repair all types of electrical equipment and systems up to 600 volts.

Qualifications / Physical Abilities

Previous mechanical experience is required.

Experience in equipment maintenance, electrical and welding.

Experience with 3-phase motors.

Experience with AC/DC circuits.

Experience with Pneumatics and Hydraulics.

Willing to help teach & train other mechanics.

Good work ethic.

Self-motivated.

Ability to lift or move 50–100 pounds.

Ability to work up to 12 hours per day.

Ability to bend, twist, and stand for long periods of time.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to withstand wet, humid, cold, and hot environments.
