Job Summary The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of gasoline or diesel‑powered cranes mounted on truck chassis. The role includes lifting, moving, and placing materials using rigging attachments such as hooks, slings, and shackles, driving the crane to and from job sites, and performing millwright duties when not operating the crane.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct daily safety inspections of cranes, rigging, and related equipment; complete required documentation such as inspection logs and critical lift forms.
Lead and coordinate pre‑lift planning and safety meetings with internal teams, contractors, and client representatives.
Evaluate work areas and properly position and set up the crane, including outriggers, blocking, leveling, and boom assembly.
Operate the crane safely, in a controlled and efficient manner, in accordance with OSHA and manufacturer guidelines.
Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the crane and related equipment.
Execute millwright tasks as assigned when not operating the crane.
Maintain clear communication with riggers and signal people using approved hand signals or radios.
Ensure the crane operating area is free of obstructions and that all safety protocols are followed.
Plan all aspects of the lift.
Direct activities of the crane team.
Verify load weights and rigging integrity.
Determine appropriate communication methods.
Make final decisions on whether conditions are safe to proceed.
Position Requirements
National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) certification.
Experience in an industrial and/or construction environment.
Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical).
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
Demonstrated knowledge of crane safety, rigging, and lift planning.
