GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER I - (SEASONAL) FORESTRY
Position within the Parks, Recreation, and Cemetery Department. Performs safety, operational, and maintenance activities within an assigned area. This seasonal position supports the grounds and facilities across Manchester.
Pay Range
$18.87/hr – $26.90/hr (base)
Key Responsibilities
Light to heavy labor tasks: shoveling, snow removal, chopping ice, sweeping floors, washing windows, mopping spills, emptying garbage cans, hauling waste.
Landscape maintenance: planting, watering, fertilizing, cultivating, mowing, raking grass.
Trim fence lines, bank dumping, and removal of illegal encampments.
Collect litter, operate blowers, hand tools (picks, shovels, rakes), and power equipment (chainsaws, edgers, weed eaters, push and riding mowers, field painters, snow guns, mechanical ski lifts).
Maintain and enforce safety rules, keep work areas clean, inventory supplies, and report needed repairs.
Perform basic maintenance: repairing windows, doors, plumbing, paint fixtures, installing irrigation, fencing, flag poles, benches, picnic tables.
Pressure wash sidewalks, stages, and paved surfaces; set up athletic fields, basketball posts, football goalposts, bleachers, gates, netting.
Prepare athletic fields, level dirt infields; apply paint or marble dust; manage soccer goals and netting; conduct field inspections.
Maintain cemetery grounds: dig graves, cover graves, set up tents, install markers, monitor safety.
Cashiering: sell tickets, process cash, keep daily account balances (ice guards only).
Clerical tasks: answer phones, provide information, maintain records and reports (attendance, incidents).
Resolve conflicts, enforce safety regulations, deliver guidance to new employees, attend meetings and training.
Respond to citizen inquiries, coordinate with other departments, and perform additional duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Operating procedures within parks and cemetery facilities.
Safety procedures and equipment operation.
Use of shovels, chainsaws, edgers, weed eaters, mowers, field painters, mechanical ski lifts.
Communication skills – oral and written in technical and non‑technical language.

Acceptable Experience and Training
High School diploma or GED.
0–2 years experience in ski areas, ice arenas, park facilities, or similar.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Manual dexterity for continuous operation of hand and power tools.
Mobility for trenches, rough terrain, and construction equipment.

Flexibility to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push, pull, climb, and grasp repetitively.
