Base pay range: $63,768.00/yr - $100,295.00/yr

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval—award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years)—are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Summary This role requires a Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school, licensure or certification at the master’s level, and a Veterans‑centric approach to counseling and interventions. The incumbent will provide evidence‑based psychotherapy, psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, referrals, advocacy, crisis intervention, education, discharge coordination, and supportive counseling to Veterans and their families. The position is full‑time, Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) and requires a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a current valid driver’s license; a clean driving record report will be required during onboarding.

Preferred Experience: Substance use, mental health, and trauma work experience (MSW, LSW, or LISW) is preferred.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship.

English Language Proficiency — spoken and written English per 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school (or pending full accreditation).

Doctoral degree in social work does not substitute for the master’s requirement.

Verification of the degree via http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation.

Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s level.

For GS‑9: VHA may waive licensure if the applicant is otherwise qualified; license must be obtained within three years of appointment.

For GS‑11 and above: licensure or certification is required at time of appointment.

In states requiring more than two years of post‑MSW experience, licensing must be completed within one year of meeting state prerequisites.

Must meet Grandfathering Provision criteria if applicable.

Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) include veteran‑centric approach, psychosocial assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention, communication with multidisciplinary teams, and foundational knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses.

Duties

Seek VA approved training and certification to provide evidence‑based interventions for mental health and addictive disorder diagnoses.

Develop psychosocial assessments of Veterans and their families.

Contribute to treatment planning and goal setting in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Collaborate with service providers for outpatient and residential care referrals.

Act as an advocate within the VA system for Veterans and families.

Coordinate crisis intervention and immediate medical attention when needed.

Provide education on VA resources, entitlements, advance directives, and health promotion.

Serve as discharge coordinator for Veterans admitted to MHRRTP.

Maintain a valid driver’s license for facility driving privileges when required.

Provide supportive counseling to Veterans and their families.

Adhere to documentation requirements in the electronic medical record.

Work full‑time, Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.).
