JOB SUMMARY Works under general supervision to perform social work assessment and crisis intervention for patients and family members presenting to the Emergency Department for care.

WORK SCHEDULE 7 pm–5:30 am. This position requires weekend coverage and will be discussed in more detail during the interview.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required

Education Master’s Degree in Social Work from an institute certified by the Council of Social Work Education.

Experience 2 years’ experience.

Licenses and Certifications (LMSW) – Licensed Master Social Worker, actively pursuing LCSW; current license required by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners.

Preferred

Experience Experience in Emergency Department.

Licenses and Certifications (LCSW) – Licensed Clinical Social Worker or equivalent.

JOB DUTIES

Perform social work assessment and crisis intervention for patients and family members presenting to the Emergency Department for care.

Anticipate patient's and/or patient's family needs and expectations and utilize these in conjunction with assessment to help develop appropriate plan of care for patient.

In collaboration with the psychiatrist on call, identify psychiatric emergencies; assess the potential for self‑harm/suicidal ideation and coordinate voluntary and involuntary treatment/commitment procedures.

Work closely with the primary responder, the ED physician and nursing staff and consult with legal authorities, military commanders, school districts and other community entities as assigned or required.

Assist Emergency Room staff in evaluation and stabilization of patients; facilitate admission and transfer processes to appropriate facilities, as indicated.

Identify psychosocial risk factors that may prevent a safe return to the community, such as suspected abuse, neglect, trauma, interpersonal violence, behavioral health concerns, homelessness, and limited resources.

Provide information and/or education to patient's and/or patient's families; complete accurate and timely documentation of all education provided; obtain feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and/or family; demonstrate effective communication with children, adolescents, adults and older adults.

Refer patients to out‑patient programs and community resources as indicated to assist the patient in meeting their health care needs and medication procurement.

Maintain timely documentation; consistently meet department and UH documentation standards.

Serve as patient and/or family advocate; respond to patient's and/or patient's family's complaints and report them to supervisor; utilize chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work‑related problems.

Maintain HIPAA privacy of all patients; access only medical records for patients that are assigned or that present to the ED and are screened for potential social work interventions.

Act as a resource for the department for complicated mental health processes as related to Order of Protective Custody (OPC) and Apprehension by Police Officer without Warrant (APOWW).

Perform other duties as assigned.
