Job Summary Works under general supervision to perform social work assessment and crisis intervention for patients and family members presenting to the Emergency Department for care.

Work Schedule 7 pm–5:30 am. This position requires weekend coverage and will be discussed in the interview.

Required

Master's Degree in Social Work from an institution certified by the Council of Social Work Education

At least 2 years of experience

LMSW license with active pursuit of LCSW; current license required by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners

Preferred

Experience in an Emergency Department

LIC (Clinical Social Worker) or LCSW license

Job Duties

Perform social work assessment and crisis intervention for patients and family members presenting to the Emergency Department.

Anticipate patient and/or family needs and expectations and use these along with assessment to develop an appropriate plan of care.

Collaborate with the psychiatrist on call to identify psychiatric emergencies, assess self‑harm/suicidal ideation, and coordinate voluntary and involuntary treatment/commitment procedures.

Work closely with the primary responder, ED physician, and nursing staff; consult with legal authorities, military commanders, school districts, and other community entities as assigned or required.

Assist Emergency Room staff in evaluation and stabilization of patients and facilitate admission and transfer processes to appropriate facilities.

Identify psychosocial risk factors that may prevent a safe return to the community (e.g., abuse, neglect, trauma, interpersonal violence, behavioral health concerns, homelessness, limited resources).

Provide information and/or education to patients and families; complete accurate and timely documentation of all education provided; obtain feedback and evaluate understanding.

Refer patients to outpatient programs and community resources to help meet their health‑care needs and medication procurement.

Maintain timely documentation; consistently meet department and UH documentation standards.

Serve as patient and/or family advocate; respond to complaints and report to supervisor; utilize chain of command to resolve work‑related problems.

Maintain HIPAA privacy of all patients; access only medical records for patients that are assigned or that present to the ED and are screened for potential social work interventions.

Act as a resource for the department on complicated mental health processes related to Order of Protective Custody (OPC) and Apprehension by Police Officer without Warrant (APOWW).

Perform other duties as assigned.
