The Staff Accountant supports the daily financial operations of the organization by maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and assisting with financial reporting. This role ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and supports grants, programs, and audits.
General Accounting
Record and maintain journal entries in the general ledger
Reconcile bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts
Assist with month‑end and year‑end close processes
Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP
Accounts Payable & Receivable
Process vendor invoices, employee reimbursements, and payments
Prepare and record deposits and accounts receivable
Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up as needed
Fund & Grant Support
Assist in tracking restricted and unrestricted funds
Allocate expenses to programs and grants as required
Support grant reporting and documentation
Payroll & Benefits Accounting
Assist with payroll processing and payroll reconciliations
Record payroll journal entries and benefit expenses
Audit & Compliance
Prepare schedules and documentation for annual audits
Assist with Form 990 preparation and compliance reporting
Ensure adherence to internal controls and policies
Reporting & Analysis
Assist with preparation of monthly financial reports
Support budget tracking and variance analysis
Provide financial data to program and development teams
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
1–4 years of accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred)
Basic understanding of nonprofit or fund accounting
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite)
Strong Excel skills
Preferred
Experience with grant-funded programs
Knowledge of Form 990 or audit processes
CPA candidate or interest in professional certification
Skills & Competencies
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Good written and verbal communication skills
Team-oriented with a mission-driven mindset
Compensation $29 to $33 an hour (based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and other job-related qualifications)
