Position Summary
The accountant position plays a key role in supporting the financial health and stewardship of both the School and Foundation. This position is the primary point responsible for recording day-to-day accounting transactions in the general ledger, preparing complete, accurate, and timely reconciliations, supporting audits, and assisting with maintaining internal controls. The ideal candidate has:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting
Nonprofit accounting experience (3+ yrs in public or internal accounting or a related field)
Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles
Ability to work collaboratively across departments and skill sets
Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize competing responsibilities
Positively represents Pius X Catholic High School to the public and the Diocese of Lincoln.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintain the general ledger daily and ensure account reconciliations are completed in a timely manner at month-end and year-end close.
Reconciliation responsibilities include but are not limited to: bank accounts, investment accounts, prepaid expenses, accounts receivable, fixed assets, credit card liabilities, payroll liabilities, inter-entity payables/receivables, and loans.
Prepare journal entries as needed for accurate account reconciliations.
Assist with net asset reporting of restricted and unrestricted activity in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Support annual budgeting processes.
Grant, Gift, and Fund Accounting
Record and reconcile monthly gift reports from Foundation to School, ensuring gifts are accurately reported by scholarship, endowment funds, and grants.
Assist with ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and prepare release entries as needed.
Coordinate with the Development/Advancement team to maintain accurate contribution reporting.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
Assist with annual financial statement audits.
Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards (FASB), and relevant state/federal regulations.
Accounts Payable, Receivable, & Payroll
Primary responsible for maintaining Accounts Payable subledger and monitoring ensuring bills are entered and paid timely.
Support payroll processing and related filings; ensure proper accounting for benefits and taxes.
Prepare year-end 1099 Forms as needed.
Prepare bi-weekly payroll journal entries to record in the general ledger.
Cash & Investment Management
Assist with banking relationships and investment reporting for endowment and reserve funds.
Reconcile investment accounts and ensure proper recording of market activity.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with the Director of Finance, School’s leadership, Foundation staff, Development team, and department heads.
Support special projects, systems improvements, and process optimization.
Organizational Development
Assist with developing processes and procedures to enhance accounting operations and create efficiencies in monthly bookkeeping needs.
