Job Title: Field Service Technician
Job Location: 930 South Business Park Drive, Port Arthur, TX 77640
Primary Function The Technician will perform electrical testing, maintenance, and start‑ups of high voltage substations. Assignments are closely supervised and designed to further develop employee job knowledge and abilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Perform electrical testing services on power apparatus, substations, and switchgear (e.g., protective relays, circuit breakers, transformers, current and potential transformers, meters, transducers, power system metering, cables, grounding systems, motors, batteries, alarm systems, and annunciators):
Protective relays and relaying systems
Circuit breakers
Power transformers
Current and potential transformers
Meters, transducers, and power system metering
Power cables
Grounding systems
Motors and motor starters
Station batteries and chargers
Alarm systems and annunciators
Perform troubleshooting, problem identification, and analysis; make recommendations regarding corrective action and/or repairs.
Generate technical reports detailing services provided, problems found, and corrective action taken or recommended.
Represent the company professionally when communicating and interfacing with clients.
Communicate effectively with company management on a regular basis regarding project status and the scheduling of manpower and equipment.
Make safety a top priority, realizing that the company has zero tolerance for unsafe practices.
Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent is required. Technician experience in the high voltage industry will be accepted in lieu of a degree. Minimum 2+ years of experience in the high voltage industry is preferred.
Possess Skills In The Following Areas
Demonstrated knowledge of The Power Triangle
Ability to understand the basics of one‑line, three‑line, AC/DC schemes, and connection diagrams
Demonstrated solid understanding of current and potential transformers
Ability to perform basic current transformer tests
Understanding of AC & DC fundamentals
Working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, ICEA, and NETA standards
Basic knowledge of various metering configurations and connections
Proven knowledge of vacuum vs. air circuit breakers
Understanding of oil and gas circuit breaker functions
Knowledge of PT, CCVT, and CT concepts
Knowledge of power transformer components
Understanding of motor ratings and testing for rotating machinery
Knowledge of capacitor banks and types
Basic knowledge of electrical components, devices, and symbols
Excellent oral and written communication skills with a diverse audience
Knowledge of protective relay functions and differences
Understanding of primary and secondary phasing
Teamwork and collaboration skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Ability to work safely in hazardous high voltage and petrochemical environments
Valid driver’s license with clean record
Ability to obtain a TWIC card
Pass pre‑employment drug, alcohol, and background checks, and ongoing random checks
Travel up to 25% with flexibility for frequent overtime
Other Information
Work situations will require an adjusted schedule—long days, evening/weekend hours—to meet customer requirements.
Must be able to work on feet throughout the shift.
At times will work in austere conditions.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Travel to job sites is required.
