Films & Converting Engineering Manager
to lead technical strategy, machine performance, and engineering execution across two packaging manufacturing plants in Wisconsin. This newly created leadership role provides critical on‑site engineering presence, alleviates executive bandwidth constraints, and serves as the technical driver for machine reconfiguration, customer trials, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate brings
10+ years of mechanical and automation engineering experience
in converting operations, with deep expertise in machine design, web‑handling, mechatronics, controls, and customer‑driven trials. This is a
working manager
position that combines team leadership with a high degree of hands‑on engineering, troubleshooting, and floor‑level execution. Key Responsibilities Own the technical execution of customer requests (e.g., new formats, down‑gauging, recycled‑content products) Scope machine modifications with design and process engineering teams Perform mechanical redesigns in SolidWorks Lead trial runs and data acquisition Validate and document results for customers, R&D, and operations Troubleshooting & Equipment Performance (20–30%) Diagnose and resolve chronic converting issues such as band sealing migration, web tracking, wrinkles, scrap, and downtime Lead structured root cause analysis and implement corrective actions Oversee mechanical, controls, and process adjustments Design and modify equipment components, assemblies, nips, rolls, mechanisms Create and update SolidWorks models and part specifications Collaborate with OEMs, integrators, and vendors on technical requirements Support FAT, installation, commissioning, and startup of new equipment Lead and mentor two direct reports (Converting Design & Process Engineering) Set technical priorities, allocate resources, and guide project execution Partner cross‑functionally with operations, NPD, R&D, and leadership Contribute to capital planning, long‑term strategy, and continuous improvement Qualifications 10+ years of mechanical, automation, or converting engineering experience Expertise in machine design, SolidWorks, web‑handling, and converting processes Strong PLC/controls literacy and mechatronics understanding Demonstrated success managing equipment trials, FAT/startup, and prototypes Experience leading engineering teams or cross‑functional technical initiatives Background in packaging strongly preferred Seniority level
