A Brief Overview
The Senior Accountant performs various duties to support the accounting function's goal of timeliness and accuracy, including review of journal entries, preparation of bank reconciliations, general ledger analysis, budget comparison, and monthly financial reporting. This role ensures proper accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and reviews financial reporting packages to meet internal and external requirements as applicable. This position is accountable for meeting the deadlines set by the manager, payroll, government, and other reporting authorities. It may also be tasked with training and mentoring other accountants during the implementation of new initiatives and the global communication of processes and procedures affecting the department.
What you will do
Perform the accurate and timely review and completion of the annual financial statement audits.
Collaborate with the Director/Manager in preparing year‑end financial statements and accompanying notes, updating disclosures required by GAAP.
Prepare accurate, timely Prepared by Client (PBC) workpapers required by the auditors.
Respond to auditor questions during interim and year‑end sessions, ensuring all questions and comments are cleared promptly.
Prepare and review general ledger analysis and entries as needed.
Provide the accurate and timely review of periodic financial reporting packages sent to the military branches of a portfolio of military housing PPP properties.
Prepare monthly/quarterly financial statements.
Review and approve Accountant and/or Accounting Clerk duties for timeliness and accuracy.
Assume responsibility for the monthly closing of a portfolio of military housing properties, including general ledger account reconciliations and bank account reconciliations.
Assist Property Management in implementing new systems and processes.
Support Property Management with accounting matters during close and reporting.
Comprehend and interpret legal documents related to the portfolio of properties.
Assist with research and accounting for complex transactions related to military housing PPP properties, including debt and equity, conveyance of assets, repair and replacement funds, demolition, construction, capitalized interest, rehabilitation work, recapitalization projects, lease‑up and operating phases, cash waterfalls, and coordination with the Lockbox Agent and Asset Management.
Ensure adherence to Restricted Use requirements for cash and other assets.
Collaborate with others in the organization to achieve consistency in accounting, reporting, system, and process implementation.
Respond to requests from other departments as needed (asset management, corporate accounting, Tax, Finance, etc.).
Perform additional analysis and communicate findings to assist leaders in making informed business decisions.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in accounting (required).
CPA or CPA‑eligible (preferred).
4–6 years of experience as a Senior Accountant.
Prior experience managing others is preferred.
Experience with Yardi, JD Edwards Enterprise One, and/or other large ERP systems (required).
Prior experience in the Real Estate/Finance industry (preferred).
General knowledge of chart of accounts, general ledger, trial balance, financial statement preparation, GAAP and internal control policies and procedures.
Detail‑oriented, able to meet specified deadlines.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, data‑analysis, and logical‑conclusion‑drawing skills.
Ability to multitask and work as part of a team to meet both team and individual goals.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong computer skills and proficiency with MS Office, especially advanced MS Excel.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Independent thinker who demonstrates strong attention to detail and thrives in a dynamic environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with effective interpersonal skills at all management levels.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (preferred).
