Summary Work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The day includes helping children develop social skills (making friends, conflict resolution), making healthy choices (nutrition, recreation), building self‑help and school readiness skills, and exploring the environment.

Responsibilities Curriculum

Develop schedules and activity plans, and provide input into plans by entry and intermediate level Educational Aids.

Ensure program plans incorporate observed needs of individual children and youth.

Implement activities and special events that meet physical, social, emotional, cognitive needs.

Prepare and implement program options for children and youth with special requirements.

Demonstrate, instruct, lead, and facilitate planned and spontaneous program activities.

Model developmentally appropriate practice and activity area management.

Promote safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices.

Arrange or serve appropriate snacks or meals where applicable.

Indoor and Outdoor Environment

Prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials.

Set up displays and bulletin boards.

Inventory equipment and recommend replenishment.

Secure supplies, equipment, and facilities.

Interactions and Relationships

Establish an environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions.

Interact with children and youth using approved guidance and development techniques.

Supervision of Children and Youth

Provide care, supervision, oversight, and accountability in compliance with DoD, NAF, and local policies.

Maintain control of whereabouts and safety.

Supervise during daily schedule, field trips, outings, and events.

Ensure authorized departure per written parental instructions.

Observe for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect; report per policy.

Parent and Employee Communication

Interact professionally with employees, parents, and local command personnel.

Provide parents with daily feedback about their child/youth or program activities.

Participate in conferences with parents and employees.

Assessment

Observe and document developmental progression and concerns.

Participate in program evaluation using designated instruments.

Compliance

Assist in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation.

Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations.

Notify supervisor of health, fire, and safety concerns.

Additional Responsibilities

Collect, maintain, and report program participation data.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Complete required training certificates; maintain certifications or credentials required by DoD CY programs.

Pass all applicable records and background checks.

Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing.

Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, be free of communicable diseases.

Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided.

Marijuana is illegal under Federal law; positive test results will result in withdrawal of offer and ineligibility for 6 months.

Position identified as a Test Designated Position (TDP); must consent to pre‑employment and random drug testing.

Starting May 7, 2025, non‑affiliated individuals must have a REAL ID‑compliant driver’s license or other acceptable ID.

Qualifications Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01)

Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.

Follow verbal and written instructions.

Complete DoN training requirements within specified timeframe.

Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Work cooperatively as a team member.

Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01)

Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles.

Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices.

Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.

Follow written instructions.

Plan and organize; work cooperatively as a team member.

Promote effective relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Six months of experience working with children or youth in a CY setting.

Target Level (CY‑1702‑02)

Knowledge of child and youth development principles to inform program response.

Implement developmentally appropriate practices and services.

Promote effective relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Work cooperatively as a team member.

Communicate program information and explain CYP processes.

One year of experience working with children or youth in a CY setting.

Education

Provide a copy of high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts.

Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.

Note:

Prior experience with children or youth is preferred.

For Intermediate Level: Six months experience and completion of Navy Entry Level training.

For Target Level: One year experience and either completion of DoD training, valid CDA/MSA credential, or a 2‑year degree in a related field.

Additional note: If degree not awarded, provide HS diploma or equivalent with any certificates.
