Summary CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CY Program. The day includes helping children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution; making healthy choices such as nutritional snacks or appropriate recreational activities; building self‑help and school readiness skills; and exploring the environment around them.

Duties Curriculum

Develop schedules and activity plans; provide input into plans developed by other Assistants.

Ensure program plans incorporate individual child needs.

Implement activities and special events that meet physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs.

Prepare programs for children with special requirements and follow supervisor instructions.

Demonstrate, instruct, lead, and facilitate planned and spontaneous activities.

Model developmentally appropriate practices and activity area techniques.

Promote and model safety, fitness, health, and nutrition.

Help arrange or serve appropriate snacks or meals.

Indoor and Outdoor Environment

Prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials.

Set up displays and bulletin boards.

Inventory equipment regularly and recommend replenishment.

Secure supplies, equipment, and facilities.

Interactions and Relationships

Establish a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions.

Interact with children and youth using approved child guidance and youth development techniques.

Supervision of Children and Youth

Provide care and supervision in compliance with DoD and local policies.

Maintain control of whereabouts and safety.

Supervise during daily schedule, field trips, outings, and special events.

Ensure authorized departure according to written instructions.

Observe for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect and report as directed; mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services.

Parent and Employee Communication

Interact professionally with employees, parents, and local command personnel.

Provide parents with daily verbal or written feedback.

Participate in conferences with parents and employees.

Assessment

Observe children and youth and document developmental progress or concerns; use information for planning.

Participate in program evaluation using rating scales, risk assessment tools, self‑inspection materials, and accreditation tools.

Compliance

Assist in achieving DoD certification and national accreditation.

Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations; report health, fire, and safety concerns.

Additional Responsibilities

Collect, maintain, and report program participation data.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials mandated by DoD.

Pass all applicable records and background checks.

Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive test results in removal.

Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide immunization evidence, be free of communicable diseases.

Marijuana use is illegal under federal law; a positive marijuana test will result in withdrawal of offer and ineligibility for 6 months.

This position identified as a Test Designated Position; subject to pre‑employment and random drug testing.

Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01)

Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.

Follow verbal and written instruction.

Complete DoN training requirements.

Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Work cooperatively as a team member.

Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01)

All entry level abilities plus:

Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles.

Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices.

Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.

Plan and organize as a team member.

Six months of experience working with children or youth.

Target Level (CY‑1702‑02)

All entry and intermediate knowledge and abilities plus:

Knowledge of child and youth development principles to inform program response.

Skill to implement developmentally appropriate principles, practices, and services.

Skill to promote effective relationships and work cooperatively.

Skill in verbal communication to provide program information.

One year of experience working with children or youth.

Education

Provide copy of H.S. Diploma, GED, or college transcripts showing degree awarded/conferred.

Education Requirements by Level

Entry Level: At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.

Intermediate Level: Six months experience in child or youth setting, plus completion of Navy Entry Level training (or equivalent Army, Air Force, Marine).

Target Level: One year experience and either DoD standardized training, CDA/MSA credential, or a minimum two‑year degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related fields.

Additional Information Incumbents must satisfactorily complete all background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, Tier 1 child care check, State Criminal History Repository check, Installation Records Check, Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program records, Family Advocacy Program records, and installation security check via NJIS database as prescribed by DoDI 1402.05. Automatic disqualification may apply for criminal offenses or negligence in child care. Some positions require a one‑year probationary period. Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer in first 30 days is required, and E‑Verify confirms eligibility to work in the United States. This recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies within six months of announcement closing.
