Summary The mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime. Pre‑Sentence Investigators conduct fact‑finding interviews and investigations of a criminal defendant’s background, record those facts in a pre‑sentence report, and submit this report to the court for proper sentencing.

Responsibilities

Conduct personal interviews with offenders to collect detailed information on family and criminal background, employment, mental health and substance abuse history, and the offender’s version of the crime.

Make collateral contacts with family members, neighbors, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, witnesses, and victims; gather, review, and analyze criminal background and other police, probation and parole, military, restitution reports, prosecutor’s information, and psychological and equivalent evaluations.

Screen information, review notes, and evaluate data for validity and eliminate unsubstantiated, inflammatory, or prejudicial data.

Compile information, write a report detailing all facets of the investigation, and make a recommendation concerning disposition of the case and outline plans for treatment and rehabilitation available to the court.

Write reports according to Supreme Court Rule 32 guidelines and deliver the completed report to judge, prosecuting attorney, and defense counsel.

Attend court proceedings and testify to elaborate on or defend findings and recommendations of the pre‑sentence report.

Minimum Qualifications

Some knowledge of in‑depth interviewing to solicit facts and determine eligibility, typically gained from at least six months of full‑time experience in the criminal justice system administering policies and procedures related to offender management or legal processes.

Some knowledge of the criminal justice system, typically gained from at least six credit hours or 36 hours of training regarding criminal justice or a closely related field.

Experience writing detailed reports with supporting rationale for recommendations, gained from at least six college‑level credits or six months of full‑time work experience in report writing.

Experience using computer applications for creating documents, collecting and inputting data, and generating reports, typically acquired through at least one year of experience or a computer training course covering basic and intermediate skills.

Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and antisocial behaviors.

Willingness to review documents and graphic materials such as sexual and violent crime content, including written and descriptive details.
