Position Overview The Accountant is a key member of the finance team in an
Engineering and Land Surveying Firm . This role is responsible for
handling all aspects of the accounting function , from day‑to‑day transactional work to month‑end close and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working independently while supporting multiple departments and projects.
This position requires a strong understanding of
professional services accounting , including project costing, timekeeping, invoicing, and compliance requirements common to engineering and land surveying operations.
Responsibilities General Accounting & Financial Operations
Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate coding of all transactions
Perform monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close activities
Prepare journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
Maintain fixed assets and depreciation schedules
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
Process vendor invoices and employee reimbursements
Ensure proper approvals, coding, and documentation
Manage vendor relationships and W‑9s
Prepare and process weekly or bi‑weekly check runs and ACH payments
Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies
Prepare and process client invoices, including progress billing, percentage‑of‑completion, and cost‑plus billing
Coordinate with project managers to ensure accurate billing and supporting documentation
Post cash receipts and manage collections
Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on past‑due accounts
Project & Job Cost Accounting
Set up and maintain project numbers and cost structures
Track direct labor, overhead, and project expenses
Reconcile job cost reports and investigate variances
Support project managers with financial data and reporting
Payroll & Timekeeping
Process or support payroll, including certified payroll when required
Review employee timesheets for accuracy and compliance
Reconcile payroll registers to the general ledger
Manage payroll taxes, deductions, and benefits accounting
Compliance, Audits & Reporting
Assist with annual audits, FAR audits, DOTD, or other agency reporting
Prepare and file sales tax, use tax, and other required filings
Support year‑end reporting and coordination with external CPAs
Maintain internal controls and accounting documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Minimum
3–5 years of accounting experience , preferably within an
Engineering and Land Surveying Firm
or other professional services environment
Experience working in a role requiring broad responsibility across the accounting function
