Position Summary
As a Diesel Mechanic, you’ll play a key role in keeping our locomotives running safely and efficiently. In this hands‑on position, you’ll inspect, service, and maintain diesel engines, trucks, and equipment while following important safety and company guidelines. You’ll work with tools and instruments to diagnose mechanical issues and make repairs. Over time, you may qualify to operate specialized equipment including locomotives in a shop setting, following federal standards. This physically active role offers on‑the‑job training and real opportunities for growth.
Reports to the Superintendent of Mechanical and Superintendent of Railway Operations.
Reporting Locations: TXGN Railway, Gonzales, TX
Position Requirements
Education And Experience High school diploma or equivalent
Licenses And Certifications Valid drivers license without restrictions
Skills And Attributes

Must be proficient in written and spoken English
18 years of age or older
Able to understand and follow written and oral directions
Availability Requires commitment to irregular work hours in support of the success of a 24/7 operation. Occasionally works extended hours and shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Physical
Able to frequently climb ladders, get on and off equipment, work at various heights including doing repairs on top of heavy equipment and locomotives, and work on uneven surfaces
Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, squat, crawl, and sit for extended periods of time
Able to use hands to hold, grasp, turn or pull
Able to reach over shoulder level
Able to work in tight space on locomotives and equipment
Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain EMD locomotives mechanical and electrical systems
Able to work with loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dirt, and dust
Assemble, repair, disassemble, install, or replace locomotive diesel engine components
Test and repair fuel systems, radiators, safety valves, air compressors, draft systems, couplers, brake systems, safety appliances, and lube oil pump filter systems
Repair wheels, springs, hangers, running gears, and brake rigging traction motors
Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance on locomotives, tools, and equipment, including timely 92‑day inspections
Perform minor electrical repairs on locomotives
Maintain documentation on all repairs and inspections
Obtain quotes for all repairs that need to be outsourced
Maintain the assigned company vehicle, all tools required for mechanical job and grounds around work areas
Properly dispose of used materials such as oil, filters, and other waste products.
Return cores timely
Able to operate tools and equipment safely and efficiently
Visual
Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, and yellow
Must have good night vision
