Purpose of role
The Senior Scrum Master plays a pivotal role in driving Agile maturity across the organization. This role mentors Scrum Masters and Agile practitioners, leads complex programs, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. The role champions Agile values, implement scaling frameworks, and support engineering excellence through DevOps practices. They will also influence change at the organizational level, removing impediments and enabling high-performing teams and continuous improvement. Key responsibilities
People Management & Development
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 4-5 Scrum Masters, supporting their career growth through regular 1-on-1s, performance reviews, and development plans. Drive all aspects of hiring, including recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding, to build a high-performing and diverse team. Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and psychologically safe team culture, managing morale, engagement, and addressing team dynamics. Manage team capacity, identify and mitigate risks, and communicate progress and blockers effectively to leadership and stakeholders. Scrum Master Leadership & Mentorship
Guide and mentor Scrum Masters and Agile practitioners to elevate Agile capabilities. Manage cross-team coordination and resolve dependencies to ensure smooth delivery. Monitor and improve team metrics (velocity, cycle time, quality), identify patterns and improvement opportunities, and guide teams in achieving consistent, predictable delivery. Provide coaching, guidance, and feedback to junior and mid-level Scrum Masters, supporting their professional development and effectiveness. Agile Coaching
Drive Agile capability building and maturity across teams and departments through coaching, workshops, capability building, and best practice adoption. Influence senior stakeholders, product leadership, and management to adopt Agile mindsets. Guide Product Owners in backlog management, stakeholder engagement, value prioritization, user story creation, and maximizing product value delivery. Implement and tailor Agile scaling frameworks such as SAFe, LeSS, or Scrum@Scale. Organizational Impact
Identify and remove organizational impediments that hinder Agile adoption and team performance. Propose & apply change management strategies to support Agile transformation initiatives. Establish and lead communities of practice, facilitate knowledge sharing sessions, and create forums for continuous learning and collaboration across teams. Assess current agile practices, identify enhancement opportunities, design and implement improvements, and measure impact on team and organizational performance. Personal attributes
