The City of Wichita is NOT an E‑Verify Employer. This position is an advanced administrative role that coordinates environmentally sustainable activities and resiliency efforts, including drought preparedness, extreme weather, and other environmental emergencies.

Overview

Research, pursue, and complete grant applications and supporting documents.

Collaborate with city departments on sustainability and resiliency initiatives, ensuring cost‑effectiveness and feasibility.

Develop and implement environmental education programs, providing training and outreach to staff and the public.

Track greenhouse gas emissions and monitor utility data to recommend improvements.

Report annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). Serve as the key contact for interdepartmental and public sustainability inquiries.

Examples of Work

Identify and apply for grants related to sustainability and resilience.

Assist staff and community members in navigating funding from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Federal Tax Credits, and State/Local Rebate Programs funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.

Research and implement sustainability and resiliency initiatives, including but not limited to:

Drought Planning/Mitigation

Electric Vehicles

Environmentally friendly purchasing policy

Green Business Recognition

Green Infrastructure (Trees, stormwater drainage)

Local Risk Assessment (Natural Disasters and Environmental Hazards)

Planning/Zoning (Solar, Transit, Urban Infill)

Urban Heat Mitigation (Trees, reflective pavement/roofs)

Waste Reduction/Recycling/Composting

Track and report greenhouse gas emissions to provide baseline data for the City.

Monitor monthly utility data and recommend adjustments and improvements.

Report annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Serve as a key contact for interdepartmental sustainability initiatives/communication and for public inquiries related to sustainability.

Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements of Work

Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

Creative problem‑solving and analytical skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to operate a standard keyboard and monitor configuration.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective time management.

Experience with electronic spreadsheet development and basic statistical operations.

Knowledge of research techniques, information sources, and statistical procedures.

Ability to plan and organize the work of others.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.

Possibility of requiring a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Must not pose a direct threat to the safety of others in the workplace.

Experience and Training

Required Experience And Training:

Graduation from a four‑year college in a field related to environment, research, administration, or communications OR three (3) years of experience as a project lead in environmental project implementation and/or grant writing.

Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Experience And Training:

A bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, communications, public or business administration, or research methods.

One (1) year experience in implementing environmental projects and/or grant writing.

Salary and Benefits

Starting pay will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.

Conditional on passing a pre‑employment physical (including drug screening) and satisfactory criminal record check.
