Overview Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The area provides a wide array of outdoor amenities and activities with miles of hiking and biking trails, national parks, two lakes, and the Sacramento River. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. To perform general cleaning custodial functions at assigned campus classrooms, buildings, and/or other facilities. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this job class exercise responsibility for the general cleanliness of assigned campus areas.

Classified position: Range 27 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday and 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Friday. This is a classified position with a default CalPERS retirement. Supervisor: Custodial Services Supervisor or designee.

Essential Functions

Performs general janitorial and custodial functions at assigned campus areas

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and buffs flooring

Cleans, vacuums, and extracts carpets, and upholstered furniture

Cleans, dusts and polishes walls, furniture, woodwork, and office equipment

Cleans chalkboards and markerboards, empties pencil sharpeners, and cleans classrooms in routine manner

Washes, scrubs, mops, stocks, and disinfects restrooms

Cleans and polishes metal work such as door panels and hand railings

Washes windows and glass doors

Maintains appearance of the exterior of assigned buildings, such as washing windows, cobwebbing, etc.

Empties and cleans waste containers and picks up paper and other refuse on grounds in immediate area of assigned buildings

Sweeps sidewalks, entrances, and breezeways

Assists in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture, and other equipment

Sets up, services, and breaks down district/community events

Makes minor non-technical repairs, such as replacing lights, replacing batteries in automatic flush valves, replacing dispensers, and adjusting blinds, desks, or other furniture

Replaces batteries in District clocks and maintains correct time

Reports unsanitary and fire safety hazards

Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning, and polishing machines, scrubbers, etc.

Locks and unlocks doors and gates to ensure security of buildings and related areas

Drives district vehicles, collects trash, and disposes of trash

Delivers, stocks, and keeps inventory of supplies and equipment to assigned campus areas

Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and functions as required

Knowledge

Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools, and equipment

The safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial and custodial work

Ability

Understand and follow oral and written instructions

Safely and effectively use and apply cleaning agents, equipment, and materials

Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

Experience / Education

A valid and appropriate California Driver’s License

High school diploma or equivalent

One year of experience in custodial work or the equivalent

Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

New Classified Appointments will be placed at Step 1 on the Classified Salary Schedule and will graduate to the next step on July 1st if the hire date is before February 1st, with subsequent steps annually thereafter to a maximum 21st step.
