Position Summary
High Voltage Distribution Specialist (Power Line Tech II) – Appalachian State University, Boone, NC. Permanent full-time position under New River Light and Power Co – 170600. Salary: $69,878 – $78,000 annually. Not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Primary Purpose Work in this class involves the construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines. Install and maintain New River Light and Power’s fiber‑optic network.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of high school and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Maintains required certifications (CDL).
Required Certifications
CDL Class B required within 6 months of hire date.
Must be able to operate university‑owned vehicles with valid driver’s license.
Essential Job Functions
Work with live high voltage conductors, maintenance of electrical equipment, installation of underground power lines, and repair of overhead lines and poles.
Install and maintain NRLP’s fiber optic network cables.
Climbing, hand work, digging, heavy lifting, and all weather work required.
Train and assist less experienced “B” lineworkers.
Use powered equipment and safety techniques including climbing gear, bucket/digger trucks, excavators, high voltage gloves, and hoses.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Construction, maintenance, and repair of high‑voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines.
Operate university‑owned vehicles with valid driver’s license.
Journeyman level skills and knowledge with ability to complete both physical and technical duties.
Live or relocate to within approximately 20 minute commute of Boone within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Credentials from an Electrical Utility Lineman School Program and 4–5 years of electrical lineworker related work experience.
Lives within 20 minutes of Boone, NC.
Holds DoL Journeyman credentials.
Holds CDL Class B license.
Work Schedule
Mon–Fri, 7:00–4:00 pm. Some call back and after‑hours required. Designated as mandatory for emergencies, closings, adverse weather, and other department‑defined events. Part of after‑hours on‑call response rotation.
Must live or relocate to within approximately 20 minute commute of Boone within 90 days of hire.
Physical Demands Physically able to perform duties of the job. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate physical and basic technical abilities as part of the interview and consideration process. Physical assessment and skills test administered to finalists who qualify.
Salary Range Anticipated hiring range: $69,878 – $78,000. Pay commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity, and market considerations.
