Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)

as a field mechanic, maintaining a fleet of light and heavy trucks, snow plows, bulldozers, graders, and other equipment to keep the traveling public safe. You will work in the field, perform shop work, and respond to emergencies for the State’s highway system.

Responsibilities

Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems including gas & diesel engines, brakes, drives, transmissions, differentials, drivelines, generators, rear‑end assemblies, carburetors, tires and wheels, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, AVL and cooling systems, and computer‑controlled sanders and liquid de‑icing systems.

Use a wide range of testing equipment to diagnose equipment components for defects or malfunctions.

Work on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5‑ton single‑axle & 10‑ton tandem axle, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15’ mower tractors.

Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and overhaul systems and parts; fabricate and install special equipment or replacement parts using mills, lathes, welders, torch sets, plasma cutters, and metal cutting saws.

Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional.

Design and fabricate mounting brackets, special tooling, and other small fabrication projects; use arc welding, oxygen‑acetylene, plasma cutting, MIG and TIG welding.

Perform routine maintenance checks, inspections, and adjustments—fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, clutches; change filters and oil; lubricate vehicles and motor‑driven equipment.

Maintain service logs and records; complete annual DOT safety inspections and certify vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance.

Keep tools, equipment, and workspace clean, organized, and in good working condition.

Instruct operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment; maintain current knowledge of safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, and wear all required personal protective equipment.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Expected work schedule: 4, 10‑hour days in summer; 5, 8‑hour days in winter.

Primarily in the field with some shop work.

Respond to emergencies outside regular hours; work overtime, weekends, holidays, and some on‑call time.

Lift up to 70 lbs., bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks, and operate CDOT vehicles.

Expose to extreme temperatures, loud noises, fumes, gases, dusts, high voltage (>600 V), and electrical shock.

Use computers, cell phone, and state radio to communicate with supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least 1 year diagnosing/repairing heavy‑diesel equipment (10‑ton snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, graders, paving machines, or 15’ mower tractors) with current proficiency at the journey level.

Valid driver’s license; must obtain and maintain a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with no air‑brake restrictions within 90 days of hire.

Pass pre‑employment screening, drug test, and DOT physical.

Willingness to respond to emergencies outside regular hours and to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated success with the responsibilities listed above.

State service experience related to duties of this position.

Commercial Driver’s License Class A with no air‑brake restriction & tanker endorsement.

Experience designing/fabricating parts and special tools for unique or emergency situations.

ASE certifications in diesel engine, drive trains, brakes, suspension/steering, electrical/electronic systems, HVAC.

Strong interpersonal, communication, problem‑solving, and safety commitment.
