Position Summary
The Assistant to the Cabinet Secretary provides high-level administrative, operational, and strategic support to the Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health. This at‑will position serves as a trusted liaison between the Cabinet Secretary’s Office, department leadership, the Governor’s Office, external stakeholders, and state partners, ensuring efficient operations and effective communication in support of the Department’s public health mission.
Key Responsibilities
Provide executive‑level administrative support to the Cabinet Secretary, including calendar management, correspondence, scheduling, and coordination of meetings and events.
Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external communications, exercising sound judgment and discretion.
Coordinate preparation of briefings, reports, presentations, and background materials for executive meetings, legislative sessions, and public appearances.
Track priorities, deadlines, and action items to ensure timely completion and follow‑up.
Support interagency coordination and communication with other cabinet agencies, the Governor’s Office, legislators, and community partners.
Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information in accordance with state policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the Cabinet Secretary’s Office.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Exceptional organizational, communication, and time‑management skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced, executive‑level environment.
High degree of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.
Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across diverse teams and stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, health administration, or a related field or equivalent relevant experience.
Experience providing executive or senior‑level administrative support, preferably within state government, healthcare, or a public‑sector environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in West Virginia state government or in a cabinet‑level office.
Familiarity with legislative processes, policy development, or executive operations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
At‑Will Employment Statement This position is an at‑will appointment and serves at the pleasure of the Cabinet Secretary. Employment may be terminated at any time, with or without cause or notice, in accordance with applicable state and federal law.
