Job Description Summary The Financial Counselor is responsible for evaluating scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding/coverage, including assistance with Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage, and other resources that reveal the ability to pay out of pocket for MUSC Health services. The counselor provides patients with copayments, deductible, and deposit information to be paid prior to services rendered.

Job Summary/Purpose: The Financial Counselor evaluates scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding/coverage, including assistance with Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage, and resources that reveal the ability to pay out of pocket for MUSC Health services. The counselor provides patients with copayments, deductible, deposit information, and accurate billing estimates using Epic.

Responsibilities

Function as an integral member of the health care team, reflecting a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm and mutual respect.

Assist scheduled patients to locate billable insurance coverage, screen for potential Medicaid eligibility, SSA disability, and/or charity applications; notify patients of copayments, deductibles, deposits prior to services and collect when applicable.

Provide estimations using the fee estimation tool in Epic; assist in resolution of Financial Assistance Program applications; record accurate patient data.

Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations, including those related to FAP, Cobra and other programs.

Work closely with internal and external peers, communicating at a high level of professionalism; interact with state workers and external partners to accomplish work efforts.

Ensure that all patients are appropriately processed and worked for financial counseling; analyze and interpret credit bureau data.

To work accounts assigned to patient WQ’s in Epic, meeting departmental established expected metrics.

Comply with all MUSC Health policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required Minimum Education and Requirements: High school diploma with two (2) years customer service/collections experience, or bachelor’s degree and one year customer service/collections experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and health insurance preferred. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of Epic preferred. Punctual, dependable, with excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Exhibits good organizational skills, strong initiative, and a goal‑oriented attitude. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with necessary contacts, demonstrates professionalism, and seeks continuous self‑improvement.

Degree of Supervision: Work independently with minimum supervision; excellent interpersonal, written, and oral skills required; ability to analyze, determine necessary steps to achieve expected outcomes and follow through with actions.

Physical Requirements Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders, and lift/carry objects weighing up to 20 lbs. Maintains 20/40 vision corrected. Works in a latex‑safe environment indoors; occasionally works in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Additional Job Description Education: High School Degree or Equivalent Work Experience: 0–6 months.
