Senior Accountant – Non Profit
Location: Onsite NYC • Pay rate: $40-52 per hour, long term contract
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced
Accounting Analyst / Staff Accountant
to join our clients non‑profit finance team, reporting directly to the Controller and Interim CFO. This role is essential for maintaining the accuracy of our daily general ledger and cash management functions, with a strong emphasis on system‑driven data analysis and reconciliation.
This position offers the opportunity to play a vital, hands‑on role in our financial operations, ensuring compliance and efficiency across key accounting cycles within a mission‑driven environment.
Key Responsibilities General Ledger & Financial Analysis
Conduct in-depth analysis of the General Ledger (GL) to identify missing entries, particularly regarding prepaids, accruals, and invoice creation, ensuring automated system transactions are complete and accurate.
Review all expenses recorded as prepaid assets to ensure they are
accurate and properly classified .
Maintain and update a detailed
monthly amortization schedule
for all prepaid expenses, verifying the system's correct monthly amortization.
Conduct account analyses and prepare supporting financial reports as assigned.
Cash Management & Reconciliation
Record, code, and manage all incoming cash transactions in the GL accurately and in a
timely, daily manner .
Prepare and complete
monthly bank reconciliations , thoroughly investigating and resolving all reconciling items for Supervisor sign‑off.
Manage and record general ledger entries for
stock gifts .
Reconcile transactions from the donor database and Bursar database
with the General Ledger monthly to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Maintain comprehensive schedules for cash clearing accounts and interest income.
Manage outstanding check lists and collaborate with the Supervisor on
escheatment processes .
Organize and maintain supporting documentation for all cash receipts in compliance with institutional record retention policies.
Process Documentation & Support
Document and regularly update comprehensive workflows and procedures related to all cash management processes.
Maintain and monitor cash deposit logs and a list of all bank accounts, including their type, interest rates, and authorized signers.
Qualifications & Requirements
3+ years of strong, professional accounting experience
is required.
Prior accounting experience within a non‑profit, foundation, or educational institution
is highly desirable.
Direct experience with
Workday
is highly ideal; candidates with expertise in other large ERP systems such as
NetSuite, Oracle, or SAP
will be considered.
Required proficiency in
Microsoft Excel , including the ability to utilize functions like
Pivots and VLOOKUPs .
Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
Proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple accounting tasks simultaneously.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
