Nonprofit Organization in Midtown is seeking a
Senior Accountant.
Responsibilities
Support the full monthly close process including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and supporting schedules
Maintain the accuracy of the General Ledger through regular reconciliations including cash, investment accounts, fixed assets, scholarships, and other key balance sheet areas
Monitor and reconcile payroll activity to the GL, ensuring employee compensation, benefits, and related liabilities are accurately recorded
Review and upload payroll and benefits data from Paychex into the accounting system; research and resolve mapping issues and discrepancies as needed
Prepare periodic financial reports and schedules to support internal management reporting and external audits
Manage fixed asset accounting including acquisition tracking, CIP monitoring, depreciation calculation, and audit documentation
Perform monthly bank reconciliations for operating, restricted, and payroll accounts and follow up on outstanding items with relevant departments
Support compliance through quarterly reconciliation of payroll tax filings (941), payroll‑related controls, and benefit contribution accuracy
Assist with reconciliation and reporting of scholarship activities, including preparing monthly management scholarship reports
Ensure accurate recording of cash transfers, treasury sweeps, and consolidated billings
Maintain documentation of financial processes and contribute to enhancements in internal controls and system efficiencies
Provide analytical insight into payroll and other expense activities to drive process improvements
Participate in annual audit preparation and respond to auditor inquiries for assigned areas
Perform other accounting duties and assist with special projects as assigned by management
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
Minimum 4 years of accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit or education environment.
Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month‑end close requirements.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel and financial systems; Paychex experience a plus.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Strong analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
Demonstrates sound judgment, initiative, and a continuous‑improvement mindset.
