Overview The South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities through person-centered services. SDDC is part of the Department of Human Services and offers a range of positions that require varying skill and educational levels to ensure successful operations.

Responsibilities The Direct Support Professional (DSP) Supervisor selects, schedules, supervises, mentors, coaches, provides job-related education and training, and evaluates Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) assigned to specific modules to ensure treatment plans and appropriate services are delivered to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Create and manage DSP schedules, including use of scheduling software systems.

Supervise and provide work direction to staff in carrying out unit activities with residents.

Mentor, coach, and train new DSPs; evaluate performance.

Organize and meet timelines; communicate individualized support plans.

Implement person-centered practices; recognize and respond to atypical behavior.

Maintain records, prepare narrative and numerical reports, and utilize electronic master records.

Follow established policies, procedures, and safety protocols.

Assure quality of care through evaluation of individualized support plans.

Qualifications A BA/BS degree in human services or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge of:

Basic health care and the needs of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Policies and procedures at SDDC for individuals who are intellectually or developmentally disabled.

Effective supervision methods; behavior management techniques; crisis prevention and intervention.

Training methods for individuals with developmental disabilities; recognition of typical behaviors at various developmental levels.

Physical and emotional needs of institutionalized individuals.

CPR and First Aid.

DSP scheduling process and scheduling software system.

Ability to:

Competently utilize scheduling software.

Supervise staff and allocate resources.

Mentor, coach, train new DSPs.

Organize and meet timelines.

Exercise discretion, make sound decisions under pressure.

Evaluate individualized support plans.

Communicate individualized support plans to DSPs.

Implement person-centered practices.

Recognize and respond to atypical behavior.

Help individuals develop self-help skills and behaviors.

Follow policies and procedures.

Serve as a role model for appropriate behaviors.

Keep records, prepare reports, and navigate electronic master records.

Instruct staff in the treatment of developmentally disabled individuals; orient new staff.

Maintain working relationships with staff.
