Textiles Materials Engineer

$115,000 annually
About the Role A global Tier 1 automotive supplier of polyurethane foam materials is seeking a highly motivated Textiles Materials Engineer to join its corporate headquarters in Troy, MI.
In this role, you will develop and maintain a comprehensive materials database through internal and external benchmarking of automotive trim materials such as leather, fabric, vinyl, urethane, and carpet. You will collaborate closely with product engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, suppliers, and OEM customers to select, validate, and optimize materials for specific automotive applications.
This position plays a key role in material selection, supplier validation, cost-reduction initiatives, and root cause analysis related to material performance and warranty issues.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain a materials benchmarking and database system, including lamination interactions where applicable
Identify, evaluate, and recommend materials based on customer and OEM specifications
Work directly with OEM customers on construction drawing approvals
Support the establishment of material specifications and standards
Participate in product testing, development, and manufacturing processes
Lead or support root cause analysis for material failures and warranty concerns
Create best practices and standardization for material selection and lamination
Support quoting activities for lamination programs
Partner with engineering, purchasing, plant teams, and suppliers on material validation and cost reduction initiatives
Collect, analyze, and organize data for internal and external technical reviewsFacilitate and lead cross-functional technical meetings
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related STEM field (preferred)
5+ years of experience as a Materials Engineer, Textile Engineer, or Process Engineer
Hands‑on experience with textile fabrication processes and/or testing of face‑good materials, including fabrics, vinyl, leather, carpet, or similar trim materials
Experience working with vinyl, synthetic, and non‑synthetic materials, ideally in automotive or industrial applications
Additional Skills & Competencies
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
Proven ability to build trust and collaborate with OEM customers
Highly organized with strong attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and product testing/documentation software
Willingness to travel up to 20%, including international travel
