Primary Responsibilities: Accessioning all pathology and cytology specimens.
Technical preparation of specimens to ensure diagnostic accuracy.
Prioritizing workflow within the department.
Using the laboratory computer system and equipment.
Required Education, Experience and Certification/License: High School Diploma.
Two years of college coursework completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum or equivalent with 12 hours science credits preferred.
Associate of Science, Applied Science (or similar) preferred.
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities: Analytical waived/moderately complex testing.
Performing specified waived or moderately complex testing and investigating integrity of test results per CLIA testing responsibilities.
Maintaining quality control records and troubleshooting equipment.
Performing proficiency testing per standard patient testing protocol.
Specimen Processing Tasks: Process and evaluate orders and specimens for acceptability.
Maintain specimen identification and integrity through entire process.
Prioritize and distribute specimens to appropriate section for analysis.
Prepare specimens to be sent to testing laboratory.
Clerical and Service Tasks: Answer large number of telephone inquiries.
Fax, mail and deliver reports to appropriate location.
Maintain and file laboratory records and reports.
Additional Duties: Register patients and place test orders, as required.
Collect and receive patient samples, if required.
Load specimens on automated analyzer, as required.
Perform culture plating techniques and reagent preparation, as required.
Perform microbiology media preparation and glassware washing duties.
