Position Function This position is a non-sworn, uniformed officer. Mississippi State University Police Department is charged with providing for the safety of all the students, faculty, staff, and guests who attend class, work, live, and visit our campus, and with the security of university buildings and property. Mississippi State University police officers are always working and available to assist you. The department provides a comprehensive array of law enforcement services through a dedicated staff of more than 35 sworn, state commissioned police officers and 16 full‑time support personnel. All MSU Police officers are certified by the Mississippi Peace Officers Minimum Standards Commission and have the same authorities and must meet the same expectations as law enforcement officers in any community.

Area of Specialization Campus Security

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform foot and vehicle patrols of campus areas to monitor behavior, buildings, and property and communicate necessary campus safety information to the University Police Department.

Physically secure buildings as scheduled.

Open and secure rooms and buildings at the request of authorized individuals.

Provide safety escorts as needed.

Patrol campus buildings and property to ensure the security of the facilities/areas.

Escort maintenance personnel to assigned areas for repairs after hours.

Maintain radio communications with other safety personnel and officers on campus.

Respond to activation of alarm systems, including campus‑wide electronic sensor alarm alerts.

Write and submit incident reports to assigned supervisor or law‑enforcement officer.

Assist with training additional security officers and with crowd control and/or directing traffic during special events.

De‑escalate potential violent activity in stressful situations.

Perform other assigned work‑related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Two (2) years of previous work experience.

Focus: Security related acumen.

Preferred Qualifications

Education beyond the minimum.

Previous work experience.

Certification in CPR/First Aid.

Good physical condition.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work within a team and foster professionalism in job assignments.

Ability to work in stressful situations and deescalate potential violent activity.

Demonstrate vigilance for safety and deterrence of criminal activity.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Must be available to work rotating shifts (including nights and weekends), outdoors, and in a variety of assignments including foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrol.

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.

Frequent‑externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control.

Job requires sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, walking, reaching, climbing, talking, hearing and handling objects.

Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
