Job Summary and Qualifications Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist performs any three of the following non‑technical functions under the supervision of the department supervisor, manager or director. Responsibilities include specimen collection, processing, submission, monitoring, patient registration, documentation, and communication with patients and providers.
Duties
Perform venipunctures and finger sticks on patients of all ages; conduct heel sticks on infants as needed
Use appropriate supplies and follow procedures for patient identification and specimen collection based on test orders
Complete documentation, educate patients and families, and use the computer information system
Handle clerical duties such as faxing, phone calls, pneumatic tube system, and report generation
Prioritize activities and plan for timely completion of duties
Review Outstanding Specimen Report and address pending specimen collections or accessioning issues
Receive specimens into the laboratory information system and perform registration and order entry accurately
Label and aliquot specimens according to protocols and testing orders
Centrifuge and aliquot specimens, prepare for courier pick‑up, and include special instructions
Discard specimens per schedule and perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures
Collect chain‑of‑custody drug collections when required
Maintain accurate records of specimen problems and corrective actions
Clean area during emergency spills and address any specimen requirement or referral testing issues
Monitor referred testing status to ensure timely results for physicians
Communicate and troubleshoot problematic specimens in a timely manner
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Effective teamwork and excellent customer service practices
Clear communication with all personnel and patients
Ability to assist in communication to customers, floors, physicians regarding specimens
Minimum 2 years experience performing registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing
Follow safety policies and maintain privacy and security awareness
Adherence to company policies and annual completion of required training courses
Availability to work during disasters
Education & Experience
Vocational/Technical degree preferred
1–3 years in a clinical laboratory setting preferred
Certification / License
Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic or EMT certification preferred
