General Summary The Public Safety Officer will perform routine surveillance of Phelps Health properties, grounds and buildings, and will endeavor to provide a secure environment for staff, patients and visitors. Officers will perform foot and vehicle patrols, respond to calls for service, keep accurate records, and respond to situations with violence to de‑escalate and control threats.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Shows concern and respect for others by dealing with people in a compassionate, sensitive and responsive manner.

Respects the confidentiality of patient information; demonstrates working knowledge of HIPAA regulations.

Provides updates and follow‑up to departments and staff who request services from Public Safety.

Completes shift activities within allotted time frame, including daily shift logs and incident reports.

Keeps timely and accurate records of routine activities, rounds and incidents.

Provides written reports to designated managers and departments as required or directed.

Communicates with Director of Public Safety and designee regarding safety and security issues, emergencies or situations that could compromise welfare of hospital, patients, visitors and staff.

Communicates and coordinates activities related to emergencies, incidents or crisis situations in a calm professional manner.

Monitors, assists and directs parking on hospital premises per policy.

Communicates well verbally and in writing, shares important information with coworkers in a timely manner, listens attentively, asks clarifying questions, manages distractions.

Education

High School Diploma / GED required.

Graduate from Law Enforcement Academy required.

Work Experience

Minimum of 1 year road experience as a Patrol Officer or 4 years active experience in law enforcement detention.

Certification/License

BLS through the American Heart Association required.

Must be a commissioned law enforcement officer in good standing with the Missouri State POST Commission, or have held a valid commission during the three years immediately prior and able to obtain an LEO Commission within 90 days of employment.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Mental/Physical Requirements

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, read, interpret policies, related to safety and security.

Must stand for long periods, walk/run long distances; operate patrol vehicles safely.

Working Conditions

May experience long periods of standing and walking. Will come in contact with patients, families, visitors and employees.

May encounter unpleasant conditions and exposure to heat, cold, noise, dirt, inclement weather, chemicals and infectious disease. Will encounter aggressive, angry and abusive people.
