Nursing Department Assistant – Med Surg Ortho

Work Environment The General Surgery 5D Unit cares for bariatric, neurology, spinal, and orthopedic surgery patients. As Nursing Department Assistant II, you will create a safe and healing environment, provide for patients’ activities of daily living, perform support tasks, document patient condition, and transport patients and errands as directed.
Schedule Days and evenings from 11:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. with rotating weekend and holiday requirements.
Responsibilities
Provide for patients’ daily living activities.
Transport visitors and patients via wheelchair, cart, or bed.
Practice injury prevention.
Maintain established supplies levels.
Ensure safety of self and patients when transporting or transferring patients.
Perform additional transportation functions, including delivery of specimens, medical records, and patient care equipment.
Collaborate with healthcare team members to promote delivery of patient care and overall unit functioning.
Maintain, clean, and adjust department equipment, including wheelchairs as needed.
Observe and report changes in patient condition on an ongoing basis.
Assist with hygiene and care.
Document in the patient record the care provided.
Keep patient areas neat and uncluttered.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Critical thinking, customer service, teamwork, and multi‑tasking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Health care experience.
Physical Requirements
Full range of motion, frequent patient lifting, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination.
Frequent standing, walking, bending/stooping, kneeling, reaching, and squatting.
Corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.
Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
Occasional exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force; frequent 10 to 25 pounds; constant up to 10 pounds.
Physical demands exceed light work.
Personal Protective Equipment
Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
