Motor Vehicle Operator (Seasonal) – U.S. Department of the Interior

Pay Range

Base pay range: $33.48/hr – $33.48/hr (WG 7).

Location

Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC. 2 vacancies. Remote job – No telework. No travel required.

Job Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to operate one or more motor vehicles. The typical seasonal entry‑on‑duty period is April‑September, variable by weather, project needs, or funding. Anticipated entry on duty: Beginning of April. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 12/15/2025, whichever comes first.

Responsibilities

  • Operate one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment, and trash removal trucks.
  • Operate vehicles over rough terrain, in close quarters, and in heavy traffic on both long and short hauls.
  • Perform operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (monitor fluid levels, replace air filters and interior lights, check tire pressure and hose connections, wash the vehicle).
  • Perform semi‑skilled and unskilled maintenance, repair, and janitorial work in and on various unit buildings.
  • Perform manual labor tasks such as digging, pulling, cleaning drainage ditches, lifting and emptying trash containers, cleaning rest rooms, picking up litter, cleaning picnic grills, and working roads and trails, including raking and graveling.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Receive a drug test and maintain a negative result prior to appointment; subject to random testing.
  • Possess a valid State‑issued driver’s license and a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License with air‑brake endorsement.
  • Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards (uniform allowance provided).
  • May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • May be required to complete training and maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Considered emergency/essential personnel.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen‑out).
  • Operation of motor vehicles.
  • Work practices – keeping things neat, clean, and in order.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications related to mobile equipment operation.
  • Ability to drive safely (motor vehicles).
  • Ability to operate safely (non‑motor vehicle).
  • Reliability and dependability as a motor vehicle operator.
