The Behavioral Health Registered Nurse is specially trained to monitor and utilize therapeutic equipment necessary to provide specialized nursing care to patients with behavioral and/or mental disorders. They collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement a plan of care for a specific group of assigned patients, ensuring coordination of care between other disciplines, physicians, and support staff. The nurse performs professional duties that incorporate the psychosocial, psychomotor, and age-appropriate cognitive skills of the patient, family, or significant other to assess, plan, intervene, and advocate for the patient on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. They reevaluate patient response and outcomes, effectiveness of the plan of care, and readiness for discharge, revising plans or making referrals as necessary. They act as a role model and mentor to new graduate nurses, orientees, and support staff. Responsibilities
Provide patient care, review and administer medications, treatments, and procedures in a safe and effective manner that meets scope of practice and standards of nursing practice; recognize changes in clinical conditions, take appropriate action, and document interventions. Collaborate with the healthcare team to intervene, advocate as necessary, and intervene appropriately in instances of abuse, assault, or neglect or when financial or social resources are inadequate, making appropriate referrals. Develop long and short-term goals consistent with treatment plans, standards of practice, and the plan of care, incorporating patient preference and discussing the plan of care with the patient. Utilize pain management resources and other interventions to provide pain relief; provide ongoing assessments and document the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition and response to care. Review patient test results, identify critical results, and communicate in a timely manner consistent with the patient’s condition, correlating information into the plan of care; ensure nursing practice is evidence-based, within scope of licensure, and compliant with hospital-wide standards of nursing care, including core measures. Ensure infection control procedures and HIPAA compliance; collaborate with staff, physicians, and members of the healthcare team to ensure coordination of care, supervise, monitor, and delegate patient care activities; provide effective leadership and ensure care is safe and of high quality. Provide resources, guidance, and education about the treatment plan, plan of care, and medications; develop and implement accurate teaching and ongoing discharge plans. Empathize with patients and support systems, expressing compassion and understanding and demonstrating culturally sensitive care appropriate for age, religion, gender identity, or ethnicity. Active, current, and unencumbered Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing AHA Basic Life Support Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only) Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Hollywood and Van Nuys Employees only) Management of Assaultive Behavior Certification upon start date Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families Recent behavioral health experience in an acute psychiatric setting Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification (RN-BC) Pay Rate
Minimum: $48.34 | Maximum: $74.29 Sign-On Bonus
$20,000 sign-on bonus (eligible for full‑time RN positions). To be eligible, you must have at least one year of acute care RN hospital experience. Current Alta Hospital employees are not eligible and former Alta Hospital employees may not be eligible. Bonus payments are made in increments over 24 months to active employees in good standing.
