What You’ll Do
Cleaning and Polishing Teeth
Scaling and root planing: Removing plaque, tartar, and calculus buildup from teeth and beneath the gum line.
Polishing: Smoothing the teeth surface to remove stains and plaque after cleaning.
Patient Education
Oral Hygiene Instruction: Educating patients on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as the importance of regular oral hygiene.
Dietary Advice: Offering advice on how food choices and habits can impact oral health.
Taking X-rays
Radiographs: Taking dental X-rays as required for diagnostic purposes, ensuring correct positioning and safety measures.
Assessing Oral Health
Examinations: Conducting initial patient assessments to detect issues such as gum disease, cavities, and other oral health conditions.
Charting: Recording patient history, conditions, and treatment plans in dental records.
Periodontal Care
Gum Health: Assessing and monitoring the health of gums and soft tissues, looking for signs of gum disease, inflammation, or infection.
Scaling and Root Planing: Providing deep cleaning treatments for patients with periodontal disease to reduce gum inflammation and infection.
Applying Preventive Treatments
Sealants: Applying dental sealants to teeth to prevent cavities.
Fluoride Treatments: Administering fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
Assist in Treatment Planning
Collaboration: Working with dentists to develop personalized treatment plans for patients, including recommendations for follow-up care.
Sterilization and Infection Control
Maintaining Equipment: Ensuring all tools and equipment are properly sterilized and meet hygiene standards.
Safety Protocols: Adhering to infection control procedures to ensure a safe environment for both patients and staff.
Administering Local Anesthesia
In some regions, dental hygienists may be authorized to administer local anesthesia to numb the area during cleanings or other procedures.
Providing Comfort to Patients
Patient Care: Ensuring that patients are comfortable during procedures and addressing any concerns they might have.
Record Keeping and Documentation
Updating Records: Maintaining detailed patient records, noting treatment plans, progress, and any changes in oral health.
Collaborating with Other Healthcare Providers
Coordination: Collaborating with other members of the dental and healthcare teams to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
Monitoring and Managing Infection Control Procedures
Ensuring all protocols for infection control, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sterilization procedures, are strictly followed.
Dental hygienists play a critical role in both preventive and therapeutic aspects of dental care. They provide valuable support in maintaining optimal oral health and helping prevent long-term dental problems.
