Position Summary Conduct testing using mainly mass spectrometry to perform high‑complexity testing in a CLIA‑accredited and ISO 17025 compliant clinical and forensic toxicology chemistry laboratory to support both the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and the Nebraska Public Service Laboratory (NPSL). Develop, validate, evaluate and implement new methods in clinical and forensic chemistry, following all safety and laboratory policies and procedures, maintain required documentation, maintain instrumentation and required resources, support laboratory training, support research testing as needed, and maintain competency in all designated testing methods. Participate in regulatory documentation, quality control, results reporting, developmental and educational support, communicating effectively with associated clients such as statewide hospitals, private clinical laboratories, and partnering agencies at the local, state and national levels. Work with NPHL and NPSL leadership and staff in the coordination of state and national programs that are relevant to laboratory activities.

Salary Range $69,400 – $104,100 per year

Required Education Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other laboratory related science field. (Will accept a Bachelor’s of General Studies and a minimum of five years microbiology or molecular biology experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting.)
Required Experience 3 years in a research or chemistry laboratory setting. (Will accept a Bachelor’s of General Studies and a minimum of five years microbiology or molecular biology experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting.)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skilled in laboratory methodology and techniques.
Ability to analyze, document and interpret scientific and statistical data.

Individual must be able to safely test highly dangerous compounds as part of this job requirement.
Individual will be required to be on call.
Individual must be able to pass a respirator fit test.
Preferred Education Chemistry or other laboratory related science field.
Preferred Experience More than 5 years’ progressive experience in a relevant laboratory setting with some experience in chemistry.
Preferred License Yes – Certification eligible by agencies such as the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Ability to follow testing priorities and ensure efficient use of time and resources.
Able to exercise independent judgment.
Knowledge of clinical or forensic testing methods and associated instrumentation.
