Mobile Diesel and Trailer Technician Level II This position performs licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The Technician II may perform more advanced diagnostics and repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Diesel Technician or higher, learning additional advanced mechanical skills and diagnostic techniques. A successful Technician II complies with all company policies and achieves high level performance metrics.
Duties
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters, alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches, and differentials.
Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters, alternators, air conditioning, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches, and differentials.
Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
Road‑test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and generate and evaluate alternatives using sound judgment.
Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on the company‑issued service truck, performing periodic reconciliation.
Maintain and operate the company‑issued service vehicle, conduct safety checks, and perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections.
Work with and listen effectively to clients and customers to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocations.
Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Document work according to company standards, uploading pictures, parts used, and observations on Repair Orders (RO) using the company‑issued iOS device and TRAIT application.
Accurately complete DOT forms and all other required documents promptly.
Work independently, managing own daily schedule.
Maintain high productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as needed.
Communicate with management and support team via email or phone to obtain approvals on repair estimates or retrieve purchase order numbers.
Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
Maintain the company‑issued service truck, conduct safety checks, and complete daily pre‑post trip inspections.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience in a related field. Alternative combinations accepted (e.g., a degree or certification beyond HS, or 5 years of experience).
Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary for job duties.
Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months.
Must pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background check and DOT physical prior to employment.
A valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining may be accepted in lieu of a DOT physical; otherwise a DOT physical is required.
Candidates must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority regulations.
Safe drivers with a valid driver’s license are required; must hold a state‑of‑residence license, obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
