Purpose:

The Telecommunications Technician 2 is responsible for planning, layout, and complete installation of new commercial and retrofit commercial communications equipment and systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. The candidate must have extensive experience with the installation, termination and testing of Structured Cable Plant in commercial environments. Hospital or Airport installs will be a plus.

Responsibilities

Install video and data cable with Cat 5E, Cat 6 and fiber cable.

Terminate and test horizontal copper (Cat 5, Cat 6).

Terminate fiber, riser cable, and install patch panels.

Label and test horizontal cable; install backbone and riser cable (copper & fiber).

Install interior conduit, Panduit and Wiremold; read and understand plans and specifications.

Install plywood, racks, cable trays in TC, MDF, IDF; mentor apprentices; assist in OSP installations.

Pull cable 100 pair or smaller unassisted; install prefab assemblies; assist in site grounding, low‑voltage cable pulls, and all size telecom cables.

Participate in job‑site cleanup; maintain a clean work area.

Assist with tugger setup and use for large wire and long pulls; calculate wire load and conduit sizing layout.

Assist with exterior underground layout, interior overhead and under‑floor raceway layouts for telecom; assist with grounding grid and ring, splicing crimp tools, mechanical lugs, and bonding metallic portions.

Perform operational risk management briefings and contribute to hazard analysis and risk registers.

Troubleshoot and fix Cat 5, 5E, and 6 cable problems; terminate various copper termination blocks; know all fiber termination connectors and cable manufacturers.

Provide own hand tools; train and supervise apprentices; commit to safety, quality, production and schedule.

Qualifications

4+ years prior experience in commercial communications with a high school diploma or GED, or 3+ years with an Associate degree.

Valid driver’s license; subject to customer drug screening and background check.

Experience with room build‑out, Cat 6, Cat 6A, fiber optic termination, and interpret drawings.

Familiarity with BlueBeam, Fluke Versiv, MS Office Word and Excel.

Knowledge of BICSI guidelines for proper install and termination procedures.

U.S. citizenship eligible for a Secret clearance (government security investigation required).

Ready to provide and wear long pants, a shirt with at least a 4‑inch sleeve, safety toe‑toed boots, plus hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and safety vest.

Abilities & Physical Demands

Lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

Work at various heights up to 60 feet; climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and ladders.

Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull and reach overhead routinely.

Good vision, hearing, and ability to communicate in English.
