Position Summary The Grounds Maintenance Specialist is responsible for general grounds maintenance of university property.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
General lawn care including mowing, planting, trimming, fertilizing, mulching, sweeping, and blowing.
Removes trash, debris, and recyclables from grounds to designated areas.
Pressure washing sidewalks, patios, dumpster sites and other exterior surfaces.
Assist maintenance personnel in moving furniture and appliances as needed.
Provides grounds maintenance support for move‑ins, move‑outs, and special events.
Responsible for care, maintenance, and security of equipment, tools, and supplies.
Maintains a clean and well organized shop.
Reads and follows all safety instructions.
Attends training sessions and staff meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general grounds maintenance including plants, plant maintenance, fertilizers, lawn chemicals, and weed control techniques.
Skilled in the use of lawn care equipment and tools.
Ability to move furniture and appliances with or without a dolly, occasionally up and/or down stairs.
Ability to climb a ladder, work off the ground and in tight spaces.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and push up to 75 pounds.
Valid driver’s license and ability to drive motorized vehicles, including pulling an eight foot trailer.
Ability to work outside in cold or hot temperatures, and be exposed to a variety of garden chemicals and fertilizers.
Skills Considered Essential for Success
Knowledge of the organization and administration of higher education.
Knowledge of state, federal, and university rules, regulations and procedures.
Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently with common goals as a part of a team.

Demonstrate effective follow‑up.
Required Education and/or Experience Completion of sufficient education or training to read and write; plus two years of experience/on‑the‑job training, performing grounds keeping and/or the maintenance of lawn‑care equipment. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. Other job‑related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the qualifications review committee.
