Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of the Branch Chief of Transportation Permits Issuance (Senior Transportation Engineer/ Supervisor), the incumbent Transportation Engineering Technician serves as the Transportation Permits Writer in the Transportation Permits Issuance Branch.

The incumbent performs complex technical work pertaining to transportation permits. Responsibilities include:

Write permit applications for single trip, annual, repetitive, and/or variance permits for extra-legal vehicles and/or loads on state highways.

Act as a Construction/Maintenance Liaison by maintaining the program’s database with restrictions influencing permit routing.

Review/inspect the work of others as a secondary audit.

Assist supervisors with reviewing and updating Caltrans permit policies, best operating practices, and permits processing software.

Working Conditions Position located at 1120 N Street, Sacramento, Sacramento County. Telework may be eligible; the amount is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy.

Employees are expected to be able to report to the worksite with minimum notification if urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquarters location as needed.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement is considered per employee’s headquarters location, primary residence, and applicable CalHR regulations or bargaining unit contract provisions.

Junior Engineering Technician (class specification)

Salary ranges: Class A: $3,951.00 - $4,949.00 Class B: $4,695.00 - $5,876.00 Class C: $5,644.00 - $7,063.00 (new to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range).

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It must be typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font.
