The Engineer for the Substation Project Engineering department at Con Edison will provide civil engineering expertise for substation projects, supporting design and planning efforts while ensuring technical integrity and compliance. The Engineer will serve as a key contributor in delivering safe, reliable, and efficient project solutions. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities Provide technical competence to determine and develop the civil scope-of-work for a project including establishing the design basis. Prepare, review, and finalize detailed calculations, design documents, drawings, specifications, and advanced planning materials, including scoping, budgets, and appropriation requests. Offer technical oversight and design verification reviews to engineering design by third party consultants including meeting with vendors and customers to optimize the proposed design. Review designs for constructability and future operations/maintenance considerations while performing economic evaluations. Assist in developing conceptual studies, designs, reports, proposals, cost estimates, and schedules. Develop and review technical solutions for civil structure maintenance issues while updating and creating company-specific civil engineering standards and specifications. Utilize engineering design software to interpret analysis outputs and oversee both in-house and external design efforts. Provide guidance, documentation, and approved field changes to construction teams while supporting existing and proposed substation and related facilities. Facilitate technical support throughout the project lifecycle by coordinating deliverable schedules with vendors, tracking milestone payments, and overseeing progress of awarded contracts. Develop and process request for proposals (RFP) for outside services including pre and post bid field walks. Respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. Qualifications
Required Education/Experience Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and 3 years of applicable engineering experience in the design of all types of steel, concrete and masonry structures and a thorough knowledge of all applicable codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. EIT registration. Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with a Bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline and 3 years of applicable engineering experience in the design of all types of steel, concrete and masonry structures and a thorough knowledge of all applicable codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. EIT registration. Preferred Education/Experience Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering Relevant Work Experience Possess knowledge of basic engineering principles and the design of concrete, masonry, and steel structures, required. Working knowledge of all applicable codes such as ACI, AISC, NESC, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc., required. Thorough understanding of the safety and environmental issues that impact civil projects, required. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization, required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, required. Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred. Working knowledge of computer aided design programs such as STAAD, AutoCad, Mathcad, preferred. Skills and Abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills Well organized, detail oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments Licenses and Certifications Driver's License Required Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred Physical Demands Ability to respond to system emergencies Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations Ability to climb ladders and stairs Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces) Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses Additional Physical Demands The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
