Job Summary The Charge Nurse at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for providing safe, quality patient care through the nursing process, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations, and maintaining effective communication with the multidisciplinary team. The Charge Nurse must also be able to respond to rapidly changing patient needs, handle staffing assignments, and act as a liaison between patients and physicians or case management when necessary.
Clinical Practice Job Functions
Uses the nursing process to provide safe, quality patient care and document accordingly.
Works to ensure compliance with all NMHS policies and requirements as directed by the Nurse Manager and Educator.
Provides patient/family education and acts as a resource for existing staff and new employees.
Attends the Preceptor class to ensure proper training of new employees.
Maintains communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic care to the patient.
Leads daily huddles on each unit to ensure proper assignments and identify team members for the shift.
Delegates tasks to be completed during the shift to ensure EOC guidelines are maintained on a daily basis for regulatory agency compliance.
Projects caring, friendly and helpful image to patients and other customers.
Utilizes the patient’s communication board (white board) to identify name, date, goals, other staff and procedures or tests for the day to keep the patients and families informed.
Complies by the NMHS behavioral standards.
Ensures staff RN’s are utilizing the communication boards.
Maintains competency by staying informed of changing trends in the nursing practice.
Attends annual review and unit specifics within the department.
Performs required continuing education hours online and in classroom.
Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
Licensed by the board of Nursing for the state.
Qualifications Education
Associate's Degree Nursing. Required.
Licenses and Certifications
RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure
CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation
ACLS
PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Work Experience Must complete RN orientation and approved unit specific checklist.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Must maintain department requirements for continuing education and any specific unit requirements to provide appropriate age specific care; annual review and unit specifics, CARES.
Must have leadership skill and attend leadership classes as offered by the education department.
Lead and participate in the Performance Improvement project of the unit.
Must have effective communication and teaching skills.
General knowledge of various regulatory and accrediting standards.
Ensures staffing ratios are appropriate throughout the shift based on unit based matrix while maintaining appropriate productivity.
Prioritizes/delegates/evaluates work assignments.
Anticipates resources needed to provide the best quality of care for the patients.
Assimilates data and reports appropriately to providers when necessary. Implements protocols when necessary by using critical thinking skills.
Upon completion of the preceptor class, orients new employees to the unit and reports progress to the nurse manager and/or educator.
The charge nurse has routine contact with physicians, ancillary personnel, other nursing personnel, patients, family, visitors.
They must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills to all customers/co-workers, and in all aspects of patient care and job performance.
He/she will use our NMHS CARES values and behavioral standards in all personal contact situations.
