Job Summary Water Reclamation Facility Grade IV Operators supervise and perform collection and testing of wastewater samples, requiring a basic knowledge of chemistry, biology, and analytical procedures and the ability to interpret the results of these tests. The role also involves supervising, operating, monitoring, and performing preventive maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility to ensure effluent meets local, state, and federal guidelines. Operators schedule, train, assign, and review work for subordinates involved in a variety of waste‑water plant operations. The work is performed primarily in and around wastewater treatment plants.

Compensation & Benefits Jefferson County provides competitive pay and comprehensive benefits packages to include medical and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan (pension), generous paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and more. Pay range: $24.57 – $38.12 USD hourly.

Minimum Qualifications

Driver's License.

Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) Wastewater Operator Grade IV Certification.

Typical Job Duties

Conduct preventative maintenance techniques on WWTP operating equipment to ensure proper and safe plant operations.

Maintain plant equipment by replacing, rotating, and cleaning clarifiers, presses, belts, pits, pumps, basins, UV module, sand filter system, etc.

Collect samples, conduct field and lab tests, perform laboratory tests, record calculations and test results, and transpose results into monthly operating reports for submission.

Perform detailed inspections of wastewater flow and operating equipment, making necessary adjustments to ensure proper functioning.

Supervise subordinates in WWTP operations by assigning and delegating job duties, scheduling employees, and reviewing performance to ensure compliance with federal guidelines within the state permit.

Train subordinates by developing training programs, staying abreast of current wastewater guidelines, teaching courses, and providing orientation for new employees.

Communicate pertinent information regarding WWTP operations and guidelines to organization staff, the public, and governing agencies.

Maintain WWTP equipment inventory such as spare parts, lubricants, custodial, and laboratory supplies to ensure uninterrupted plant operations.

Prepare annual budget for the WWTP by making budgeting requests, recommendations, and acquisitions for submission to the county commission to ensure all resources for plant operations are maintained.

Regulate plant processes based on various settings, flow movements, and other variables.

Gather information from plant equipment and gauges, record readings, and report any malfunctions.

Maintain plant grounds by cleaning floors, walkways, buildings, removing trash and debris, and performing repairs as necessary.

Physical Demands Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs.

Work Environment Work is performed primarily in and around wastewater treatment plants. Job involves use of various hand and power tools (hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, grinders, saws, etc.). Job may require exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, including raw sewage, and may also involve exposure to airborne contaminants (e.g., dust, odors, smoke, toxic fumes).
