Join Texas Health and Human Services Commission at Big Spring State Hospital as a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I (PNA I). In this role you will support inpatient psychiatric care under the supervision of a licensed nurse, assisting patients to attain therapeutic goals while ensuring a safe and nurturing environment.

Responsibilities

Maintain direct therapeutic interactions with patients to promote living and social skills.

Assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to encourage independence.

Accompany patients to appointments and coordinate with other health‑care providers.

Monitor patients for medication administration, vital signs, and general well‑being.

Document patient conditions, behaviors, and progress in the electronic record.

Participate in shift reports, recovery team meetings, and other interdisciplinary meetings.

Respond to crisis or psychiatric emergencies using de‑escalation techniques and Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS) under RN supervision.

Perform CPR, Heimlich, and AED procedures as needed.

Promote and co‑facilitate classes, programs, and patient participation in therapeutic activities.

Contribute to individualized recovery plans and provide ongoing support toward patients’ goals.

Use basic computer skills for documentation, reporting, and communication.

Assist the licensed nurse with monitoring patients, medication administration, and competence‑level tasks.

Attend work regularly and follow the agency’s shift schedule, which may include evenings, nights, and weekends.

Qualifications

Six months of direct care experience; entry‑level preferred for associate level competency.

Valid Texas driver’s license (or out‑of‑state license with certified record) required for patient transport.

CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within the first 60 days of employment.

Knowledge of patient‑care techniques, therapeutic and recovery programs.

Basic computer literacy and ability to document patient care accurately.

Excellent skills and ability to read, write, and understand English.

Ability to provide patient care, administer first aid, and perform CPR and TIPS.

Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and interdisciplinary team members.

Minimum age 18 years; compliance with state and federal background‑check requirements.

Additional Information Work is full‑time with a regular weekend day shift, potentially including evenings, nights, and overtime as needed. The position is located at Big Spring State Hospital, 1901 N Highway 87, Big Spring, TX 79720.
