Mental Health Professional: Co-Responder

within our Crisis Team. The Mental Health Professional: Co-Responder is a licensed mental health professional who is embedded within the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department and works with officers to respond to behavioral health calls.

Brief Description

The Co-Responder Program pairs specially trained mental health professionals with law enforcement to respond to individuals in a mental health crisis who seek help through the 911 system. These professionals provide mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, treatment planning, information and referrals. Drawing on a trauma‑informed model of care, they help to de‑escalate situations, assess safety risks, and determine appropriate next steps – whether that means supporting individuals to remain safely in the community or facilitating alternative care.

Duties And Responsibilities Assist With Mental Health Related Interventions:

Respond to behavioral health related 911 calls with law enforcement and provide on‑scene evaluations, crisis intervention, crisis treatment/care plans and make referrals that are consistent with the identified needs of the client.

Provide follow‑up services to individuals and family members including phone calls, information, referrals, and on‑site visits (accompanied by law enforcement as needed).

Follow directions from the partnering law enforcement officer/deputy regarding on‑scene safety and security measures and protocols. Provide behavioral health consultation to deputies.

Provide referrals to other CMMHC services as appropriate.

Administrative And Professional Responsibilities:

Participate in CMMHC, Sheriff’s Department and other community meetings, in‑services, conferences, and supervisory sessions as required.

Facilitate mental health training for Sheriff’s department staff or community members.

Document services and generate reports as required.

Coordinate Services With Other Programs And Providers:

Effectively function as a member of the Crisis Response Team to ensure that the needs of the client, the Department and the community are addressed in an efficient and timely manner.

Communicate with other team members and supervisors to ensure seamless services for clients.

Requirements What You’ll Need:

Master’s or Doctoral Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy.

Licensed in Minnesota as an LP, LPCC, LICSW, or LMFT.

What Will Set You Apart:

Crisis Intervention training and experience.

Knowledge of community organizations and behavioral health resources.

Familiarity with or previous collaborative work with law enforcement.

Training and experience with motivational interviewing and de‑escalation techniques.

Minimum three years of licensed experience in behavioral health.

Compensation Target Range – $77,500 – $87,500 Annually (commensurate with experience).

Schedule General schedule during weekdays. Occasional after‑hours calls and emergencies may include evenings and weekends.
