Job Description and Duties Does spending your workday outdoors helping to restore and manage California’s wetlands appeal to you? The Fish Restoration Program is seeking a motivated, self‑starter to work as an Environmental Scientist. The Fish Restoration Program is part of an interagency group tasked with restoring 8,000 acres of tidal wetlands within the Sacramento‑San Joaquin Delta. The Environmental Scientist will work with program staff to manage tidal wetland habitats on restoration properties. This position will be responsible for implementing land management plans, on‑ground land management, monitoring habitat response to management activities, maintaining equipment, planning and carrying out invasive species control, and reporting. The Environmental Scientist will also act as the lead person for Scientific Aides, mentor new program staff, and oversee contractors as needed.

This position offers the possibility of an office‑centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.

Working Conditions Work in inclement weather conditions, driving/operating boats and four‑wheel drive vehicles on narrow levees and roads. Work schedule and hours will vary as field work is scheduled based on the tides and type of work being conducted. Wearing a Department of Fish and Wildlife uniform may be required as a condition of employment while conducting field work and public work duties. This position is located at the Bay Delta Region office in Stockton, California.

This position offers the possibility of a telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

Special Requirements Must be able to lift 40 pounds and be able to hike up to two miles on uneven, potentially muddy terrain. Must be able to obtain and maintain a commercial driver’s license capable of pulling a trailer rated for 10,000 pounds to haul program equipment, and a Qualified Applicator License for pesticide spraying.

This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

The selected candidate may be required to provide a copy of their Degree/Official Transcripts.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience with: Working on land management on a wildlife area, natural area, or farm; conducting wetland land management activities; preparation or review of long‑term management, habitat restoration, adaptive management, and/or monitoring plans; Delta habitats and species; research or work experience with biology and/or ecology related to restoration and/or relevant species; safely operating and maintaining equipment and/or watercraft.

Special Personal Characteristics: Self‑motivated and able to understand needs of others while assuring safety of those that rely on safe delivery to and from remote work sites. Able to identify issues or deficiencies in habitat management. Interpersonal Skills: Communicate in both written and oral fashion in a clear and concise manner so that both technical and non‑technical individuals can understand the message being delivered.
