The Municipal Utility Worker performs maintenance, repair, and installation tasks related to municipal utilities, including water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, stormwater drainage. The role requires operating various types of equipment, troubleshooting utility issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Utility Maintenance and Repair:

Perform routine maintenance on water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Repair leaks, breaks, and blockages in water and sewer lines.

Install and maintain fire hydrants, valves, meters, and manholes.

Installation and Construction:

Assist in the installation of new water and sewer lines, including trenching and laying pipes.

Participate in the construction and repair of stormwater systems, including culverts and drainage ditches.

Equipment Operation:

Operate light and heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, dump trucks, and vacuums for excavation and maintenance tasks.

Use hand and power tools to complete various repair and installation jobs.

Inspection and Troubleshooting:

Inspect utility systems for leaks, damage, or blockages and determine appropriate repair methods.

Conduct tests on water quality and system pressure, and adjust systems as necessary to ensure proper function.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.

Prepare reports on work completed, materials used, and equipment condition.

Safety and Compliance:

Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of the work environment.

Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding utility services.

Customer Service:

Respond to customer complaints and service requests in a professional and timely manner.

Provide information and assistance to the public regarding utility services and outages.

Emergency Response:

Be available for on-call duty to respond to emergencies such as water main breaks, sewer backups, and other utility-related emergencies outside of regular work hours.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience in utility maintenance, construction, or a related field is preferred.

Certification in water distribution or wastewater collection (may be required or preferred depending on local regulations).

Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of utility system maintenance and repair.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, and technical manuals.

Proficiency in operating and maintaining various types of utility-related equipment.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Physical ability to perform manual labor and work in adverse weather conditions.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license; CDL may be required for operating certain equipment.

Certification in confined space entry and safety may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.

Must be able to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, and kneeling.

Working Conditions:

Work is typically performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

Exposure to hazards such as moving machinery, traffic, and potentially hazardous materials.
