Salary
HES Facilities Management provided pay range: $49,000.00/yr - $49,000.00/yr
This is a combination position that serves as both a teacher (40% of the time) and HVAC technician (60% of the time). This is also a 12-month position (245-day contract).
Summary
Teacher: Assist students in learning the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. Create conditions that will encourage and stimulate learning. Teach two courses, each taught 3 days a week.
Technician: Responsible for performing skilled and technical work in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, BAS controls, frequency drives, oil-fired boilers, and related equipment to maintain optimal environmental conditions in all PCPS buildings. Serve as a technician when not teaching the 2 courses.
Teacher – Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Be professionally and personally responsible for the order and progress of classes under his/her authority, direction, and supervision.
Develop lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
Prepare lessons for students assigned and demonstrate written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor.
Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher instructional assistants, volunteers, and substitute teachers.
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in congruence with those goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
Employ a variety of instructional techniques, technology, and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of data sources; keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
Strive to implement through instruction and action the division’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
Select and requisition books, instructional materials, and supplies, and maintain required inventory records.
Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
Set an annual goal (or goals) for improving student achievement, using results of an initial assessment.
Diagnose the instructional needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of division specialists as required.
Administer, review, and analyze class standardized tests in accordance with division testing programs.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative procedures.
Attend staff meetings, PTO meetings, and serve on staff committees as required.
Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and develop reasonable classroom rules to maintain order in a fair and just manner.
Seat students in a manner that expedites the learning process without stigmatizing students.
Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals established by the Virginia Standards of Learning and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
Demonstrate understanding of job tasks.
Possess knowledge of teaching and instruction of the assigned grade level or subjects, using effective techniques.
Demonstrate considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the subject(s) being taught.
Demonstrate the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and well-written communication, and interact effectively with parents, pupils, teachers, administrators, classified employees, and the community.
Operate computers to design graphics and other written materials.
Demonstrate working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal content.
Demonstrate responsibility for professional growth by seeking continuing education and in-service training.
Evaluate students fairly based on stated objectives.
Demonstrate professionalism through cooperative work with staff, effective use of support services, clear and grammatically correct communication, confidentiality, timely grading and reporting, appropriate discipline management, and compliance with administrative directives.
Demonstrate self-control in interactions with the school community.
Demonstrate good work habits, including punctual and regular attendance and efficient use of time.
Review, understand, and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and professional literature.
Work with and cooperate with supervisory staff at all levels.
Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.
Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by keeping abreast of current educational trends.
Perform additional duties or responsibilities assigned based on level or subject taught as assigned by the principal.
Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Technician – Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform repair, maintenance, installation, and service of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems (including DX units, RTUs, VAVs, unit ventilators, water-source heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, variable refrigerant flow systems, DOAS, frequency drives, and oil-fired boilers), BAS controls, and related equipment.
Diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions in all refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, BAS controls, and related equipment.
Maintain records of repairs, maintenance, and service on all related systems.
Maintain records of refrigerant recovery, usage, and leak rates for all refrigeration equipment.
Install, replace, maintain, repair, diagnose, and service pneumatic, electronic, and electric control systems and related equipment.
Participate in the PCPS energy conservation program by performing scheduled maintenance of designated HVAC equipment.
Assist in developing preventive maintenance programs.
Establish and carry out safe practices at job sites.
Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Qualifications – Teaching
Must hold appropriate Virginia teaching license with the appropriate endorsement in assigned subject area or be eligible for a provisional license.
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or the public.
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.
Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Work involves operation of office equipment and limited physical tasks.
Above-average walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a classroom environment.
Qualifications – HVAC
High school diploma or equivalent.
HVAC Journeyman’s Certificate.
Universal CFC Certification.
Five years’ experience in commercial HVAC trade supplemented by coursework in the HVAC field.
Skilled in tools and equipment required for repair, service, and diagnosis of HVAC systems.
Thorough knowledge of applicable HVAC codes.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications.
Background in plumbing, electrical, and sheet-metal work preferred.
Four years technical training.
Apprenticeship training.
Knowledge of computer applications.
Time-management skills and ability to prioritize service calls based on mission impact.
Physical Demands
Frequently required to stand, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
Occasionally required to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, and talk or hear.
Must regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work involves operation of office equipment and limited physical tasks.
Above-average walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a classroom environment.
Work Environment
Frequently exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock risk, outside weather, and vibration.
